Cook Strait Swim May Begin To-Night
WHALER AS GUIDE SWIMMER CONFIDENT (Special to THE SUN) PICTON, To-day. i If the Straits are calm to-night, as it now appears they will be, Miss Lily Copplestone will enter the water, probably at Wellington Head, to attempt the Cook Strait swim to-night. This morning at 10 o’clock she went to Te Awaiti to the house of Mr. W. Thoms, a veteran whaler, who will be her guide in avoiding the powerful currents and rips which abound between the two islands. At a meeting between Miss Copplestone and the committee last evening, it was arranged to have launch, Lady Betty, owned by Mr. M. Steele, follow her on her long swim. The launch is 42ft long and is very w r ell fitted. When Miss Copplestone arrived at Blenheim by service car last evening, she was met by Mr. Healy and the Mayor, Mr. M. McKenzie, who wished her good luck on behalf of Marlborough. To-day the weather is beautiful inside the Sounds with no wind and no clouds. The swimmer is feeling very fit, so all promises well. ,
