MINISTER DEFENDS ACT

DEALING WITH DEFECTIVES Props Association WELLINGTON, Wednesday. When the attention of the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, was directed to-day to the remarks of Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland concerning the Mental Defectives Act at the Science Congress as reported in a message from Auckland, he stated that he had previously made a covering statement in regard to the principal case referred to. The facts were not as outlined in the report of Dr. Sutherland's speech. The Minister added that whatever criticism might be levelled against the Mental Defectives Amendment Act it as clearly the intention of the Legislature to strengthen the position for a progressively satisfactory way of dealing with a difficult situation in that direction. The department was applying itself with diligence and in a manner worthy of public confidence. Mr. Stallworthy mentioned that the personnel of the special board to be appointed under the Act would be announced very shortly.
