AUCKLAND MUST WIN

PLUNKET SHIELD RULES ALTERATION NEEDED ( Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, To-day. 'There is no question that Auckland must win the Plunket Shield,” said Mr. P .B. Broad, chairman of the Wellington Cricket Association, to-day. “It has the best record for the season, and Wellington does not begrudge the win. At the same time it is clear that the rules must be altered. ‘‘The present system has its advantages, as in this case, when it gives the shield to an association which has merited it by consistent performance, and which was robbed of a second win only by the weather. But the trouble is that the average system puts a premium upon the tactics of any team which wishes to ‘play Scotch.’ After watching the match between Wellington and Otago, I am convinced that if we are to get any spectators for representative matches we must adopt some system which puts a premium upon a win, if only a first innings win. Playing for a draw will kill our cricket and drive away the spectators.

“Whatever system is adopted it is almost certain to possess anomalies, but the change will have to be made in the interests of the game.”
