MINERS’ NEEDS

MINISTER ON WEST COAST Press Association GREYMOUTH, Tuesday. The Minister of Mines, the Hon. W. A. Veitch, arrived at Greymouth this afternoon .after visiting the Blackball and Dobson mining l areas. He received several deputations winch made request relative to providing pensions for miners aged over. 60 years, and for an increase of compensation in the case of fatal accidents, the establishment of colliery rescue stations and. castualty rooms, State grants for the miners' accident fund and for housing improvements at the mining places. Sympathetic replies were given by the Minister. After a civic reception at Greymouth further deputations asked that the Mines Department endeavour to provide better working time at the State mines, that the railway be extended from Rapahoe; that an increased subsidy be given for gold prospecting, and that timber workers* wages be protected. The Minister promised consideration in every case.
