HANNAN TO RACE MASON MATCH AT WHANGAREI Press Association WHANGAREI, To-day. J. P. Hannan, champion sculler of New Zealand and James Mason of Whangarei, challenger, are assiduously training for the race for the title on Saturday on the Whangarei River. Th© champion, who will use a Town’s boat, finds hot weather very trying and has lost ten pounds in weight, but anticipates being fit on Saturday. He will row at about 12 stone, and Mason at 12 stone lOlbs. The latter has improved considerably and the issue is expected to be keenly fought EVENTS AT OPOTIKI SUCCESS OF LOCAL CREWS (Special to THE SEN) OPOTIKI, Tuesday. In fine weather a number of rowing events were held at Opotiki to-day. The chief attraction was a series of four-oar races between the Opotiki and Whakatane rowing clubs. The visitors were entertained to lunch on Parkinson Island, and were the guests at a social to-night. Return matches will be rowed at Whakatane on February 9. Results of races were: Youths’ Race.—Opotiki (J. Larmer, N. Webb, G. Fox, P. Pox) beat Whakatane (B. Stewart, L. Grose, I. Grose, J. Stewart). Both crews got away to a good start, but the water was very rough, and the better condition of the Opotiki crew told. They won easily by six lengths. Tme, 3m 525. Light-weights.—Opotiki (T. Selwyn. D. Pearse, P. Hickey, and B. Mansell) beat Whakatane (F. Waugh, N. Bracken, F. Hollis, M. Camming). Both crews started well together, but after going a quarter of a mile Opotiki took the lead and won easily. Time, 3m 455. Heavy-weights.—Opotiki (A. T. Breed, X. Webb, E. Webb, P. Fox) beat Whakatane (J. Keepa, T. Waugh, B. Stewart lead at the start, but again condition told, and H. Hudson). Whakatane took the and Opotiki won by 3£ lengths. Time, 3m 25£s.
