Varsity Draws Level
ANNIVERSARY DAY CRICKET Four Point Victory PLAY which during the morning was painfully slow, brignicned up considerably at Eden Park yesterday afternoon, an I in the Ponsonby-Parnell fixture on No. 1 wicket an exciting finish was witnessed, the Ponies winning by 5 runs. ■ By virtue of the only four point victory scored on the day, University draws level with the competition leaders. Ponsonby.
Y.M.C.A. surpassed itself in its game with Graftcn, ar.d after getting its opponents out for 110, went in and knocked up 306, to which total neither Bowley nor Elliott made a substantial contribution. Tho game ended in a three-point win for the Young Men. Over at North Shore, the scoring was slow throughout the day. Eden declared with eight wickets down for 268, and put Shore in. The Shore side played carefully to avoid being beaten on tho first innings, and at stumps had 183 on for three wickets. The game thus resulted in a draw. Playing his last game in Auckland, preparatory to leaving for Dunedin to take up a position on the staff of the John MoGlashan Presbyterian College, J. A. Dunning, the Rhodes Scholar, took live wickets for 20 in Suburbs’ second innings. A FOUR-POINTER VARSITY DOWNS SUBURBS SLOW SCORING MATCH In yesterday’s holiday cricket, United Suburbs emphasised the holiday rather than tho cricket. In its match with Varsity it took two hours and more to make 56 runs. Tho warmth of a perspiring day made scoring low and slow. Matheson, bowling for the students, clean bowled three players. Dunning bowled four maiden overs out of 12. Schnauer’s fielding was reliable. Varsity opened slowly just before luncheon. After the adjournment three wickets went cheuply. Garrard, Dunning and Smeeton batted strongly. For a while the field were scoring at the rate of over two a minute. Dunning, run out, made 16 out. of 26 in boundary hits. Garrard hit 13 fours. Smeeton was a reliable partner for Dunning, and was batting well when clean bowled. Then followed a short ‘tail." United Suburbs’ bowling was not dangerous. In its _econd innings, Suburbs flopped worse than in the first, allowing Varsity to win by an innings and 82 runs. It was a procession, slow but sure, to and from the wickets. Hendy again scored highest, this time with 35. Good bowling averages were natural with such a low total. Hays’ was three wickets for 3 runs, and Dunning’s five for 20. LYON’S DAY Y.M.C.A. ROUTS GRAFTON Sadly missing the services of the light-hearted Allcott, Grafton was easy prey for the ravages of the Y.M C.A. bowlers in its lirst innings yesterday. Lyon, in tare form with the ball, was rocking ’em in in his ablest manner, and obtaining some assistance from a humping wicket, ran out eventually with seven wickets for 45 runs. Even the sedate Sale could not hold the fort for long, and had not Furley come to light with a most acceptable 39 goodness knows how many Grafton would have made. LYON MISSES CENTURY Bad as had been Grafton's opening, that of Y.M.C.A. was even worse. Elliot was cut without scoring, and Bowley should have gone at the same stage also. The coach rattled on 31. made up chiefly of six boundary hits. Then the Sussex man was nimbly vaught behind by Rowntree. The remainder of the side rose nobly to the occasion to put on a great first innings score. For Lyon, yesterday was a great
day, as besides collaring vemarkably line bowling figures, he was the chief actor in a big fifth-wicket partnership of 147 runs. Seconded ably by Kemp, lie went for the bowling and completely mastered it. banging Langridge, Horspool, Sale, Hocken, and Goodwin about in merciless fashion. The Grafton attack was completely demoralised. A RELUCTANT CATCH When approaching the magic three figures, Lyon became unduly reckless. At 97 he endeavoured to bring his century up by lifting Sale for a six. He missed. He tried again two balls later, sending an easy catch into Rowntree’s hands. Kemp was bowled eventually by Furley for 93. Details: GRAFTON First Innings HORSPOOL, b Lyon 8 LANGRIDGE, c Lyon, b Elliot .... CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE The following table shows the position of the teams in the A.C.A.'s Senior A grade competition:—-
BY FIVE RUNS PONSONBY BEATS PARNELL Opening Ponsonby’s first innings yesterday morning, partnered by McLeod, Monteith saw nine more men come and go before his (.and the last) wicket well. Out of a total of 212, lie contributed 127, so that it is safe to assume that without him the Ponies’ first strike would have been nothing short of a debacle. The opening pair put on 57 runs, and it is strange that McLeod should be the second highest scorer. Snedden, who lias not struck form with the bat this season, again failed to make any appreciable addition to the total. McCoy and Kissling, taking every advantage of a bowlers’ wicket, fairly routed the tail-enders, Fraser and Roy going for ‘‘ducks’’ and Cleverley and Burton for one each. MONTEITH’S CENTURY Monteith played a great innings, and was tho only batsman on Eden Park at that stage of the; day to make any semblance of a stand. His total included quite a number of fours, and one delightful six right into the stand enclosure. Whitelaw and Hay plodded along very wearily for Parnell early in the afternoon, but after putting on 17 runs in 40 minutes, opened out to score more rapidly. Hay could not touch Ifis partner for grace of stroke action and genius of placing power, but he banged away lustily at times. The pair put on 94 runs—an invaluable effort, considering the state of the wicket in the early stages of the innings. Whitelaw survived Hay, to be out eventually for 80. NEW FAST BOWLER A feature of the match was the tryout of a new speed-merchant—Clev-erley. Coming from Wellington recently, he has been playing in the Ponsonby third grade, where he attracted attention. He has a nice, easy action with not an unduly long run up to the wicket, and is undoubtedly the fastest man in Auckland to-day. He had Whitelaw tied up for a time, but his length did not stand the strain. Minus the services of Finlayson. the Ponsonby attack was not as strong as usual, but nevertheless it was far from being mediocre. S. G. Smith, taking: seven wickets for S 3, routed the Parnell tail-enders, and really won the match for his side. Details; PONSONBY. First Innings. POINTS ARE DIVIDED IN DEVONPORT MATCH EDEN AND SHORE DRAW Fra ter won tho toss at Devon port and sent Eden in to bat on a. wicket which appeared a bit dubious on account of a liberal watering. It was only for about half an hour before lunch that the bowlers got any assistance, however, and Eden occupied the wicket for five hours, compiling a leisurely 268, Mills being top-scorer with a stylish and faultless SS. Brook-Smith (47), Whelan (41) also batted attractively. With eight wickets down for 268, Mills declared, setting Shore the almost impossible task of getting the runs in two and three-quarter hours. Shore opened confidently, Gerrard again returning to his old free style for a nice 25 out of the first 44. Frater then flogged the Eden bowling severely for 50 minutes in making 73, but after liis departure Player and Saunders were satisfied to play out time with 188 on for the loss of three wickets, the drawn game being distinctly in Shore’s favour. EDEN TAKES IT EASY At the start of the game both Mills and Postles took things quietly, Postles being uncomfortable at first to Player, and having some narrow escapes. The pair put on 82 runs in 100 minutes before Postles was caught off Coates. A mild collapse followed, the Auckland representatives, Gillespie and Lindsay Weir, both being clean-bowled for nine and nil, while Alison Weir only made 13, and Mills went Ibw to Coates after a <*hanceless knock of 58 in two and ahalf hours. At the lunch interval Eden had lost five crack batsmen for 141, and the home side’s chances looked rosy.
After lunch, Brook-Smith continued with Cooper, and the veteran played a solid innings of 47, in which he showed strong defence. Butler and Whelan livened up matters before the closure was applied, Whelan’s 41 consisting mostly of boundaries, and Butler hit hard for a useful 30. Coates was the most successful of the Shore bowlers, and the services of Scott and H. T. Webb were missed in the attack . TEN BOWLERS TRIED
Shore, to win, had to pass Eden’s score in two hours’ less batting. Frater made his 73, top score of the match, in 45 minutes, and gave a splendid display of clean, hard hitting, which included a six, a five, and 11 fours. The other batsmen were unable to go the pace set by their captain, but played the Eden bowling with freedom. Gerrard and Saunders both pasting any - thing loose. The Eden bowling was very harmless, and with a draw inevitable, the attack was not handled seriously, only McCarthy, the wicketkeeper, not trying an over or two. Lindsay Weir secured the three wickets, which fell at a cost of 35 runs. Details:
