Vertigern and the Egmont Cup
TO-MORROW’S SPORT AT HAWERA
THE Eginont-Tarauaki-Wani morrow with the Egmont li at Hawera, and concluding on ixig meeting should prove an e: up the more important events r ritE Egrnoot fixture i.s a deservedly 1 popular one. Usually there is a . ir Auckland representation in the iflds. but there i but one Northerner ensopcd to-morrow. At latest advices he course was in excellent order, and ; he track, with Its furlong and a-half jraleht, should see some stirring fin.elies. Ohawe Hurdles pj rs t on tho programme is the Oltawe Hurdles, with ten remaining in, including fair performers such as Cilen- ‘ riff Horomea. Atareria, Vexatious Ind Asleep, and the promising Vivo rnd Royal Acre. It bears Quito an „pcn appearance, and the final views r backers may see Glenganff and Roy»> Acre sent out best backed. Juvenile Handicap Xi or e than half of the 19 engaged in *the live- furlong Juvenile Handicap will have their chances effectually settled at the start, for the barrier is situated less than a furlong from where top bend commences to turn, so it s apparent how invaluable will be the draw* and tho advantage to be gained t>v the really smart beginners. The proved performers are High Disdain, lady Quex, Banket (this pair are also jn the open sprint), Knightlike, Cullapat, Tenacre and Endorse, of the tliree-vear-olds, and Valpre and Potoleer of ihe two-year-olds, and anything outride of this coterie will be a surprise
element. Valpre and Banket arc two that s iould command a good deal of support. Tokaroa Handicap Another 19-horse field is in the hack sprint, but they are a poor lot all round, with some unknown quantities engaged. A half-dozen that have recently displayed signs of form are Knightlike, Miss Ransom, Havering, Second Thought, Warflame and Bione, and in their efforts to tine it down still further backers may express a preference for Knightlike and Warflame. This race brings the big fields to an end. Egmont Cup Some very good horses have won this mile and a-half contest, and with 3.3 the Kapine that we knew of old would not make a race of it. He went two fa:r races at Trentham last week, but it is questionable whether those outings have managed to get him back to form. Vertigern is in winning vein, and although he is steadily climbing he must be respected. Coupled with him once more will be Talisker, whose turn it is now. The latter ran a good fourth in the Wellington Cup. Hynanna won this race 12 months ago, but unfortunately he is not right yet. That trip to Caulleld seemed t%get to the bottom of him. Bright Glow was beaten by this distance last year, and with another yfar tacked on to her she may be in an the death. Her second to Pegaway in the A.R.C. Summer Cup last month was a meritorious effort. Toma staged a come-back at Trentham last week, and vron at a mile and three furlungs. It is wonderful how he retains his form, and in a comparatively small held he should be at home. Star Area tailed to stay on at Trentham, and the shorter journey the second day will be in his favour. Mendip showed fine form the second day at Marton, running Sir Rcy to a head, and the latter won again it Foxton a fortnight later. At the bottc m is Blimp, and as he went quite a good race to the turn in the Wellington Cup, a. repetition of that effort would constitute him a dangerous proposition. That completes the Held for tie 1929 Egmont Cup. and "’hen the tctalisator figures are finally adjusted the declaration may be in
ganui circuit commences to- . opening its summer fixture l Saturday. The recent AVellxcellent guide when summingon the card to-morrow. the Vertigern-Talisker bracket and Bright Glow. Flying Handicap ' l ! en . J ef t in the open sprint. At their head is the brilliant Reremoana, but with 10.0 the gallant chestnut will not need to meet with any mishaps on
the journey. Joy King failed rather badly at Trentham, and yet it is more than probable that he will be all the better for those runs In addition his task here may be more congenial. Benzora ran below form during the holiday meetings, and may go better on his home course, for he is coming down in the weights once more. A good three-year-old is hard to beat at this time of the year, and that is why Te Atiawa is fancied. Keddar is an unlucky performer, and Monoghan, despite his dual Foxton successes, may not be quite brilliant enough here. Further down is Xastori, and also Lady Quex and Banket. The form of the former will be closely watched, for she has been cleaning up the haclc events in Taranaki of late. Perhaps the best backed will be Te Atiawa and Joy King. Nolan Hack Cup This is one of those popular hack cups, to which there seems to be no end these days. On top is Gold Cure, a real good hack who wo.n the Douro Cup easily with 8.6, and now has 111 b more, ancl even this may not stop him. Lomosa, Gold Dawn, Home Made, Roi de Val, Acred. Miss Mercia, Llanore. Boundary and Gasnapper all have chances. It is not long since this race was inaugurated, but there have been' some big surprises. However, recent form would encourge punters to go for Gold Cure and Llanore. Whareroa Welter The top-weight was unlucky at Trentham when he finished fast just behind Panther and Ruanui on the middle day, and Orazone has been do-
ing things on the Taranaki-Stratford circuit. Manly is useful when right, and Paul Lucerne is improving. Nucleus showed fine form at Marton for a first and second, and Bonhomme and Seastar are possibilities, but one comes back to the pair on top. King Midas and Orazone. Waipapa Handicap Most fancied of this lot would probably be Acred. Airtight. Miss Mercia, Monsogne, Cool Mint, Green Acre, Calamine and Gasnapper, and several of these are also in the previous event. If started here Acred and Airtight would be in strong demand.
