Wool Clip Should Give Greater Return
RESEARCH GOES AHEAD SCHEME BEFORE GOVERNMENT After nearly a year of thorough investigation a wool research committee of the Council of the Scientific and Industrial Research Department has this week reached conclusions which are expected to be of far-reaching benefit to the New Zealand wool-grower. It haa been long recognised that much money could be saved on the Dominion’s annual clip if science were correctly applied to the production and treatment of the fleece, and the wool research committee sought, during the past few months, for a programme of work which would produce practical results at a reasonable cost. This now has been devised, and at a meeting of the council held at Wellington on Thursday a scheme was finalised for submission to the Government and other parties concerned. This project, which was started by a grant from the Romney Breeders’ Association, will be directed in the first place toward checking hair, heterotype and harmful fibres in the Romney fleece. These investigations will be pursued at the Massey Agricultural College at Palmerston North, under Dr. Dry, but co-ordinated feeding and breeding experiments are contemplated bv Lincoln College, Canterbury, the Department of Agriculture and other interests. The proposals include a survey of the incidence of hairy fibre among stud stock, and the effect upon it of climate and feed; also an inquiry into the yoke of wool. The wool committee, the members of which believe they have achieved something tangible for the wool industry, comprised Messrs. Perry, Short, Q. Donald. Alexander (Lincoln), Dr. Dry (Massey), X-*rofessor Peren, Dr. C. J. Reakes, *Dr. A. H. Cockayne and Dr. Marsden, director of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. It was assisted in its discussions by Dr. Nichols, who is in New Zealand on behalf of the British Woollen Manufacturers’ Research Association.
