THE TOMATO INDUSTRY

ASIATIC COMPETITION One of the largest tomato-growers in the Otahuhu district told a Sun man of the inroads being made in the industry by Asiatics. The root of the evil, he said, was not wholly due to the importation ,of tomatoes from the Cook Islands. The Tomato-growers’ Association would have to l.ook nearer home for the real trouble. They had overlooked the fact that some of the ex-tomato-grow-ers were, in a large way, mainly to blame. Not content with leasing their land to Hindus and Chinese for the raising of tomatoes, they had now let their glasshouses for tho purpose of raising the early plants, thus showing a total disregard for the welfare of the European tomato-grower. The long hourri* worked by the Asiatics and their mode of living made it hard for the European growers to compete against them, and if something is not done it will not be many years before the white man is chased right out of the trade.
