Arms Torn Off

Desperate Battle with Shark Young Man’s Frightful Injuries (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Pi%ss Association) Kecd. 11.40 a.in. SYDNEY, To-day. A MESSAGE from Townsville states that while bathing in lour feet of water at Arcadia Bav, Henry Wetherell aged 20, a son of the manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, was attacked by a huge shark

VHETHEREI.L, was bathing further " out than the others when the monster appeared, and tore off his arm. A dozen bathers dashed to the rescue, but Wetherell waved them hick, shouting: “One is enough for :1; to get!" Then ensued a desperate struggle, during which the sea monster tore off WethereU's other hand, and inflicted other hideous injuries. The young man eventualjy managed

to reach the shore, where a nurse helped to stanch the frightful bleeding. He was raced in a pilot ship to the Townsville Hospital, three miles tvway. He suffered inexpressible agony without complaint for an hour, till an operation was performed. His parents failed to reach his bedside before the youth lapsed into unconsciousness, which ended in his death. This is the first tragedy of the kind known at Townsville, where thousands bathe all the year in what are known as shark-infested waters.
