FRIEZES
('Written for THE SUN by the Rev. Charles Chandlers Assistant City Missioner) " r T y HERE is no mistake about it,” said Penrad, the philosopher , filling his pipe, ‘'that no matter how drab the wallpaper may be, the frieze will set it off.” "When going into a room and making a quick survey of its furnishings, that which impresses one most is the nature of the frieze.” "With that I don't agree” said Marmon, the morose, as he drew strange figures on his blotting-pad. “What strikes me most upon entering a room is the smudge on the carpet, or the dirt on the window, or the tear in the wallpaper. I have.a mind which quickly discerns the blemishes.” "Yes. yes, of that I am well aware,” answered Penrad. “I suppose that you have heard about those two men who looked out of prison bars, and of how the one saw mud and the other saw stars.” "Yes. of course, I have. Is there anyone who hasn't?'' "Well, then,” continued Penrad, “you put me in mind of that chap who looked out and saw mud. You would allow the pimple on the back of a girl's neck to spoil for you the beauty of her face. Why, Marmon, old man, they say that there's even a spot on the sun. "The noblest thoughts that can possess the mind of a man —his philosophy if you will—that is the frieze upon the common texture of his life. What a man thinks is of far greater account than what he wears, or than what he does for a living. "Look out for the frieze, and you ivill often find that even he who, upon first sight, impressed you unfavourably, is just chock-full as an egg of sterling qualities, and that with the interchange of thought are revealed the small beginnings of a Plato or a Socrates. “Look for the frieze , Marmon, look for the frieze.” NEXT WEEK: POST-DATED PLEASURES.
