IN INDIA

Far away in India there lives a little lady and a big man in a bungalow with a verandah running all along the front of it. Very often the sound of tiny feet can bo heard pattering about the verandah, and little bright eyes will peep at them from behind tha open doors. Now, these little feet and round blight eyes belong to somebody called Jinny, a very dainty, fussy little person Who loves to pop in at tea-time, having a very special affection for rock cakes. Her conversation is rather limited, and, in fact, she chiefly speaks with her ©yes to the little lady and the big man, though I believe she way* quite a lot to her babies when she goes home at bedtime. For .Jinny, when I last heard news of her, had two babies, and they all lived together in a hole in the garden! You see Jinny, though a. perfect lady In every sense of the word, is really *. mongoose! One day the* little lady with the bungalow, seeing Jinny’s eyes asking ns plainly as eyes can ask for something to eat as she perched on a rail of the verandah fence, put some meat down on the floor for her. Jinny immediately sprang down and started enjoying the feast. Suddenly she ■topped eating and stood up on her legs (she has a very long body and short legs), and looked about her up and down and # all round. Then she ran to the edge of the verandah, stood up again as if wondering, looked about her once more, and then, her mind being evidently quite made up, away Into the bushes eh© ran, in a moment returning with her two little babies trotting after her. Then they all set. to and gobbled up their dinner.
