Actors Bombed
Recently a number of people went to the City Theatre at. Frankfort-on-Main, Germany, In gas masks. They wore them because the previous night the actors and the audience were assailed with stink-bombs and tearbombs by those who desired to stop the performance of “Marriages are Made in Heaven,” owing to what they claimed was its blasphemous character. Peaceful means of stopping performance of the play had failed, and no attention had been paid to the resolution of a mass meeting of citizens demanding that the play should not be presented. A Protestant clergyman rose from his place in the stalls and protested against the performance of such a play in a German theatre. He left after his protest, but as the play continued, a rain- of stink-bombs fell on the stage and stalls and was followed by a shower of tear-bombs. People rushed from the theatre with tears running down their faces and with handkerchiefs to theii* noses. The police were called in, but in the con- , fusion could do nothing, and did not know whom to arrest.
