FOR ITALIAN NAVY
NEW CRUISERS, DESTROYERS AND SUBMARINES (Australian and IY.Z. P-ress Association) Reed. 9.15 a.m. ROME, Friday. The Italian Cabinet has decided to begin the construction in June of two 10,000-ton cruisers, two flotilla leaders, four destroyers and live submarines. Italy proposes to build lour eucli cruisers. Compared with the uew British vessels of the same type, they are three knots faster (the respective speeds being--32 and 35 knots), and have the enormous horsepower of 150,000, as compared with the 80,000 of our own ships. Both British and Italian carry eight eight-inch guns, but the latter is also armed with 16 fourinch weapons as compared with the former’s four. On the other hand the Italian vessels have a much smaller radius of action, and are practically without armour, whereas the British ships are of.mnarativf.lv well protected.
