SILTING UP

TROTTING AT FORBURY

KQRO PETER WINS AGAIN TRACK IN GOOD ORDER DUNEDIN, To-day. The Forbury Park Trotting Club’s Summer Meeting concluded to-d:iy in dull but fine weather. There was a , large attendance and the course was in i good order. | Results: WAVERLEY HANDICAP 1 mile 5 furlongls 1 KORO PETER. 60yds 1 S—AILEEN WOOD, 12yds 2 3 KERETA, 3 All started. Won by three lengths, one length between second and third. Time, 3.55. Despite a bad break half a mile from homo Koro Peter won the Waverley Handicap very easily. Although it took him 100 yards to correct his gait, he did not lose any ground. Aileen Wood went solidly troughout to earn second money. Ruby Bingen began well, but spoilt her royal chance of wining by making a bad break at the end of live furlongs. Leo Bellman is an honest trier, but a mile and three furlongs is as far as lie can stay. An inquiry was held into the reason for Koro Peter breaking. The driver’s explanation was accepted. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP Of £250; 1 mile. 10—LENAMHOR (Walsh), 12yds .. 1 4 MAIWHARETI, 24yds 2 3—rita mckinney, 12yds ...... 3 Scr.: Bingen Patch, Wraekler. Won by two lengths, a length between second and third. Time, 3.15 3-5. But for making a bad break three furlongs from home, Maiwhareti would have won the Telegraph Handicap. Rita McKinney, who finished third, also spoilt a good chance by declining to begin correctly. After losing 60 yards at the start she was with the leaders at the bend for home. The winner, Lenamhor, owed his victory to Honesty. He was quick to leave the barrier, and made the most of his advantage. with the result that he outstayed the opposition in the straight. Dick Logan broke a hopple. GORE HANDICAP. Of £225; 11 miles. 2—CURFEW BOY, scr . .. 1 7—KIOWA, 24yds 2 5 BECKY MINE, scr 3 All started. WESTLAND FORESTS Mr. C. E. Foweraker, M.A., lecturer in charge of the Canterbury School of Forestry, read a paper on the “Silting Up of Kahikatea and Totara Stands in Westland,’’ at the Science Congress ' yesterday. He showed that two of the most common types of forest on the river flat of Westland were the Kahikatea or white pine and the totara. The former grew in swampy localities, and the latter on better drained shingly areas. Changes in the course of the rivers led frequently to the deposition of silt, often up to* several feet. When this deposition exceeded about two feet changes . occurred in the stands. Kahikatea was completely killed out and a forest of scrub and broad-leaved trees arose in its place. Totara, on the other hand, responded to silting by throwing out additional root systems at a higher level and thus continued its vigorous growth. The soil in both types of forest was good and. formed excellent pasture. Thus these forests, being on the fertile river flats, were bound to be removed, and to give place to grazing country.

For his special trains the King pays 13s 4d a mile, in addition to first-class fares for all passengers. A new German cruiser to be constructed at Kiel is to be electrically welded, no rivets being used in any part of the ship.
