Turf Notes

Takapuna Fixture | The summer meeting of the Takai puna Jockey Club, opening to-day, will ! be concluded on Tuesday (Anniversary | Day). Acceptances for the second day i close at mid-day on Monday. First W.F.A. Race The first of the present year’s weight-for-age races in Australia will be decided at Moonee Valley this afternoon. This is the William Reid ; Stakes, run over six furlongs, to which ! the club adds £l,lOO. Entrants for this race include Greenline, Sydney’s chief sprinter; Mollisoh, the unbeaten two-year-old; Simeon’s Fort, a Doncaster Handicap hero; and Gothic, whose entry for the Newmarket Handicap this year, by the way, indicates that his owner, Mr. Sol Green, possibly has hopes of winning for the third consecutive year Victoria’s chief sprint race Greenline is more forward than Gothic, Simeon’s Ford and Mollison, and for this reason, if for no other, the Greenstead gelding may prove supreme to-day. At any rate, the nomination of these horses indicates forcibly that we are again on the eve of important autumn meetings. ■ Licence Withdrawn ■ The Licensing Committee of the ! New Zealand Racing Conference has withdrawn the rider’s licence held by i the Riccarton jockey, J. Campbell. Walked On Him | When K. Warner rode Ripdale on ; to the course at Trentham on Thursday to do a preliminary for the High- \\ eight Handicap, the saddle slipped, and catching the rider unawares, he was dropped heavily to the ground. Before he could move the horse coolly walked on the jockey, planting one foot firmly upon that vital spot, the solar plexus, and as a result "Warner was a cot case for the ambulance. A broken rib was the result of the mishap. Warner continues to get into more than his share of trouble. A wellknown trainer raised the point, soon after the accident, of the position of the owner in regard to the riding fee in cases of this natui'e, not altogether known, where, for various reasons, a second rider has to be requisitioned. The trainer mentioned claimed that Warner, having weighed out, was entitled to the fee (£3 4s), and that the owner could not be compelled to pay a second fee to the substitute jockey (H. Godfrey). Perhaps the latter took the mount for the honour and glory of it — but there was little honour and less glory in Ripdale’s subsequent showing.

CONDUCTED BY “EARLY BIRD”

The Third Time Historic has been one of the most unlucky horses seen out at the Wellington meeting. Robbed of any chance of winning the Wellington Cup by a bad start, he was again left in the big handicap on Thursday. Will his third outing this afternoon 'be more fortunate? He was a good thing beaten on Thursday, for after giving the field a start he beat all but Yoma. Historic was down in the weights then and H. Goldfinch had the mount, but this capable horseman will be at Takapuna to-day. Perhaps Historic’s mission this afternoon will be the Consolation Handicap, and probably his old pilot, B. H. Morris, will be in the saddle. His First Outing The hard ground at Trehtliam the first two days prevented Gascony from starting, but the King John gelding, thanks to yesterday’s heavy rain, is to be given a run this afternoon in the sprint. Taking a line through Reremoana’s form on Tuesday. Gascony must have gone close to winning the sprint that day. He will be given the chance this afternoon of confirming this opinion, for he is in a weak and small field in the City Handicap, which race is timed for 4.30 p.m. Overlooked It was apparent that the majority of racegoers quite overlooked the good race run by Yoma in the Wellington Cup, in which event he was always prominent, and finally finished seventh. On Thursday he was 14tli favourite in a 14-horse field, but that he did not pay very much over a score when lie won indicates the wide margin of the market. Heavy showers prior to the Wellington Racing Club Handicap no doubt assisted Yoma to hit out with all his old freedom, and he got up to win handsomely. The margin in his favour was a good head, but some photographs published of the finish of the race would make it appear as if Historic beat Yoma by a long neck. That picture is most deceptive, for, obviously, the camera-man was placed well beyond the winning post. Just Got There Gay Ballerina, who has won three out of her last four starts in this country, had to pull out the very best that was in her to extend her already attractive record. She had to be hard ridden all the way up the straight to fend off JEquitant. Reed fairly lifted Gay Ballerina along, giving a most vigorous exhibition, and the manner in which the filly responded made it plain that she is no quitter. After her hard race it was wisely decided not to ask Gay Ballerina to run again at the meeting. Her Day? In the Hack Sprint at Trentham on Tuesday* 1 Lucky Bag led the big field a merry dance for five furlongs, when she retired and finally finished well back. The distance of the concluding event at Trentham this afternoon (starting at 5.10) is five furlongs, and as the going is sure to be on the soft side, the Lucullus filly will appreciate the conditions even more. It is rather significant that the stable also had the speedy Grand Acre in this race, and paid up for Lucky Bag only. However, there are 25 in the event, and there appears every prospect of a turn-up. t Bit Unlucky Twice unlucky in the Trentham sprints was Lysander. On Thursday he was putting in a strong challenge to the three-year-olds, Childsplay and Silver Paper, when he was interfered with a furlong from home, and when Goldfinch got him going again the other pair had three lengths advantage, a gap which the Absurd horse reduced by nearly two lengths so far as Chlidsplay was concerned, and a bit more where Silver Paper was concerned. Lysander’s third was a meritorious performance under the circumstances, and his few supporters—he was at a big double-figure quotation were distinctly unfortunate in not collecting. Off To Sydney When produced for the first time, in the spring. Ruling Chief, one of the successful Chief Ruler tribe, created a very favourable impression, despite the fact that in each of his few starts the youngstex' failed to run into a place. Now it is announced that the two-year-old is to go into George Price’s stable at Rand wick, the intention being to let him do his racing on the other side. Ruling Chief is owned by the well-known Waikato sportsman, Mr. Matthews. An Untimely End Trainer G. Foulsham sustained a serious loss last week by the death of the smart three-year-old Clarmal. The filly was backed like a certainty for the second division of the Three-Year-Old Handicap, at Moorefield, on the previous Saturday, and looked all over a winner as she led around the hoine turn. Suddenly she stopped, and at the finish was not in the first six. On the Sunday Clarmal was given a swim, but later it was found that she was suffering internally. She was treated for the ailment, but became so bad that a couple of mornings later she was taken to John Stewart and Son’s veterinary hospital. Though everything possible was done for the filly, her condition did not improve, and she died that afternoon. A three-year-old by Claro. from Maltstinny, Clarmal was purchased as a yearling by Mr. V. P. Smith for 425gns, and was leased to Foulsham. She had won two races at Menangle Park, and gave promise of better things. Handicapping 154 Youngsters The Two-year 7 old Free Handicap compiled by Mr. Hawkins, the English Jockey Club’s official handicapper. is on different lines to former hndica,ps. There is. as always, no fee unless the owner accepts, but instead of being run at two years old at the Newmarket meeting it will not take place until the third day of the Craven meeting next April, when they are three-year-olds. This time Mr. Hawkins has handicapped a much greater number of youngsters than ever before, no fewer than 154 of them being included, and acceptance is to be declared on Hecember 18. Even so, the handicapper has left out one or two smart 3 r oungsters, one being Lord Astor’s Cragadour, who ran Mr. Jinks to two lengths for the New Stakes at Ascot However, Cragadour has been missing from the racecourse since his first and only appearance, and the handicappe* may have good reason for leaving him out. With 154 colts and fillies to be handicapped, Mr. Hawkins has made the top weight 9.7, and gone no lower than~ 6.7 for those at the bottom of the handicap. The flying filly Tffin is at the top with 9.7, and the Middle Park Plate winner, Costaki Pasha, and Mr Jinks next in order at 9.6, while Reedsmouth (9.2) and Arabella (9.1) are the only others at 9.0 or over? Many of those lower down are sandwiched together. as can be imagined, with it ! margin of only 421 b between the top land bottom-weights.

WONDERFUL!

SPRING BLOSSOM’S FEAT DELIVERS THE GOODS That a mare should unexpectedly foal shortly after being successful in a flat race is unusual, though more than one instance has been known in Australia. Recent files to hand from England relate a much more extraordinary happening, which occurred early last month. At Carlisle on Thursday, December 6, the three-year-old filly Spring Blossom won the Southwaite Hurdles. She had slipped a dead foal on the previous Monday. Spring Blossom won tlio Bryn Hurdles at Ilaydook Park on Friday, November 30, by 10 lengths, and was boxed the same night fo.r her training quarters at Lochmaben, near Dumfries. She arrived home on Sunday morning, and on Monday night slipped a dead foal. She was sent to compete for the Southwaite Hurdles at Carlisle, and again won easily. Mr. John Johnstone, her owner, who is a member of the National Hunt Committee, and who had been unaware of the filly’s condition, said:—’’Spring Blossom had no temperature after the mishap. She ate up as usual and didn’t leave an oat. The ‘vet.’ examined her and advised me that to keep her in strong work was the best way to prevent any ill-effects that might otherwise result. Accordingly I decided to run her, and that this was the wisest procedure is proved by the fact that she won very easily and remained in tip-top condition.” One of the most notable instances of an in-foal filly winning in England was the victory of Legerdemain in the Cesarewitch in 1849. In a field of 31 runners that then three-year-old carried 5.7. The following day Legerdemqjii slipped a filly by lon. She did not ra'ce again till the following season. Legerdemain became dam of the brilliant Toxophilite, sire of Musket. For Sprints Only? When Mollison resumed work after his unbeaten two-year-old career his trainer, F. Foulsham, stated that he would rather reserve the brilliant son of Seremond for sprint races than take the risk of dulling his speed by attempting to make a stayer of him, comments a Sydney writer. At that time, however, it was in the lap of the gods whether Mollison would be as great a stayer as he was a sprinter, and it was recognised by his party that it would be foolish to pass over the chance of winning the rich three-year-old classics. Mollison, however, was outstayed by Prince Humphrey in the

King Lu to Race at Te Aroha Meeting

LUCY ROSE IS WELL (Special to THE TE AROHA, Friday Mr. D. Borrie, of Waihou, the breeder-owner of the full-brother to Peter Amans, is sending him to F. Tutchen’s stable at Frankton. He has now got over his unruly ways, and, being in the right hands, will probably make good in due course. Mr. G. A. Reid's Lucy Rose has brightened up considerably of late, and is going better on the tracks than hitherto. On her best form she may j race to advantage at Matamata next j week. : The Chesterfield gelding, now trained here by C. R. Wallace, is being re- * strieted to hill and road work. lie looks well and will most likely conj test the jumping events at the Paeroa j meeting. • King Lu is a much better horse now than when he raced at Kllerslie recently. He has freshened up and is executing his work in good style. It is thought that he will be ready to race at the local meeting, where the tracks should suit him admirably. Has Improved The Marble Arch gelding. Crown Arch, ran a fair race at Parawai this : month, but he has shown a noticeable j improvement since, and is now in a j condition to enable him to race to I advantage. Tlis track work is cerj tainly satisfactory, and there should jbe no reason why he should not reI peat it with the colours up. ) Mr. R. B. Hines’s Lady Mestor can i now be included among those showi ing distinct improvement. By Polymestor, she is sure to improve with age. She has grown and filled out nicely, and is a filly showing plenty of quality. Glenstar has been executing really good track work during the week, and is holding his condition well. On a dry track at Takapuna he will race up to form, but is not suited in the slightest degree to a damp or holding turf. Sprinter Improving Ruffles is improving gradually, but may not yet have arrived at the state he was in when being enrolled a winner. He is by no means a back number, but in his races may be defeated by sprinters that have been raced into condition. The hurdle mare, Lady Spalpeen, is on the easy list just now, but in view of jumping events in the near future will soon be among the working brigade. C. Mallowes is letting Dainty Arch run along in her work. She will not be unduly hurried, and during the autumn months may race fully up to expectations, and by next season have to compete in open company. There was some fairly interesting track work on Thursday, although the grass gallop was on the damp side. Orchus, King Lu, Lady Rose, Glenstar, Queen Arch and Lady Mestor were restricted to easy pacing. Ruffles ran half a mile in 52, and Indolent skipped over three furlongs in 39. All Wera and Tanetoa set out together for a five-furlong sprint. They ran neck and neck throughout, and there was little between them at the finish in 1.6. Tanetoa moved very smoothly throughout, and looks like being one of the best of the local brigade very soon. Black Maire finished well over six furlongs in 1.20, and Crown Arch registered 39 for three furlongs, with a light-weight up. J. H. Wallace’s team, including Love Call, Te Koroke, Tea Time, Flying Tresses and Belle Star, executed satisfactory tasks.

Goonalara had been unluckily beaten in a novice event. She was left at the post, then secured a six lengths’ break and failed in the last few yards. Punters therefore argued that she would leap to the front from barrier rise, and get an unassailable advantage in the first few furlongs. Her barrier position, close to the rails, gave rise to further hopes, and so she shortened until at one stage it was impossible to get better than evens. Missed the Jump Public hopes, however, were dashed as soon as the barrier rose. The mare jumped away cleanly, but Hyland seemed to be caught unawares, and before the mare could be settled down she bad been cast back behind many horses, and her chance was hopeless. But even after extricating herself fron* her position, she could show no pace, and the stewards immediately called the connections before them. Later they reported that they had accepted the explanation of the ownertrainer, W. Pratt, but cancelled the permit of the apprentice, J. Hyland, on the grounds of incompetency.
