HELP FOR INDUSTRY
MR. BALDWIN’S PROMISE NO TAX ON FOODSTUFFS (United Service) LONDON. Friday. The Prime Minister. Mr. Baldwin, in an election speech at Newcastle-on-Tvno. slid the Government would continue tc help industry in three ways—by Imperial preference, by safeguarding, and by reducing the burdens on industry. He repeated his pledge not to impose taxes on foodstuffs. He condemned nationalisation, with its record of nothing but failure and loss everywhere. Mr Baldwin gave the following figures as the losses in experiments in nationalisation in connection with shipping: Australia, £14,000,000: Canada, £10,000,000; the United States, £100,000,000.
