Major-General Sir Granville Ryrie. made his first public appearance since his illness at the Australia Day celebration at St. Dunsian's-in-the-East. The large congregation included Lady Ryrie, the official secretary for the Commonwealth in London. Mr. T. Trumble. and Mrs. Trumble. the Agents-General of the Australian States and their wives, the Countess of Stradbroke. the Dowager-Countess of Dudley. Sir Frederick Young. Dame Nellie Melba. Ada Crossley, the Hon. J. A. Boyd, Sir Alan and Lady Cobham. The church was decorated with wattle. The octogenarian Bishop of YVillesden. Dr. William Perrin, in an elo quent sermon based on the text, “Go up and possess the land which I have given unto you,” said that Australians had made great efforts to possess their land, to develop it and to bring forth wonderful fruits. He was afraid, however, that the spirit of selfishness sometimes keeps the people of Ausi tralia from wishing to take even Engj land’s best. | The collection was divided between the Fail-bridge School and the Church of England Emigration Society.
