BROUGHT FLY PEST

BAN WANTED ON ISLAND TOMATOES GROWERS SEEK RESTRICTION Press Association WELLINGTON, Thursday. The first conference of the newlyformed Dominion Council of Tomato, Soft Fruit and Produce Growers. Limited, resumed to-day. Delegates expressed an opinion that Rarotongan tomatoes were the cause of bringing to New Zealand the fruit fly, and they asked that a restriction be imposed on tomatoes from there, or their complete exclusion from the Dominion. Another reason for requesting their prohibition was the great difference in labour costs as between New Zealand and Rarotonga, making it impossible for New Zealand-grown tomatoes to compete with those of Rarotonga on the score of prices. It was stated also that large quantities of poor Rarotongan tomatoes were sold in the Dominion without brand as local grown, thus having a deleterious effect on the New Zealand-grown tomatoes. The restriction was asked for partieluarly for the month's of October, November and December. A motion was carried that a census of the tomato industry in New Zealand be taken.
