Yoma Launches Big Surprise
FINE RACING AT TRENTHAM
KEEX racing under miserable conditions was witnessed at Tientkam > esterday. r lhe totalisator handled 50,254, h decrease oi £</t.*,629 on the second day last vear. which, however, was a public holiday.
Mungaroa High-weight Bleak weather conditions prevailed for the second day’s racing of the summer fixture of the Wellington Kacing Club, a strong wind being accompanied by showers, which made the conditions most unpleasant. The course was in excellent order, overnight rain having made little impression on the hard ground. Imarosebud sprang a mikl surprise in the Mungaroa High-weight, giving ;l double-figure return. Zeuxis (£976) and Quarterdeck (£623) were the favourites, and they finished together just out of a dividend. At the start Asleep got away badly, and Elicit’s rider was nearly pulled out of tho saddle when he got caught in the tapes. Decoy Bird was in charge from the start, and going along the back was out five lengths from Pale Star and Quarterdeck, with General Wal, Imarosebud and Zeuxis next. The field commenced to bunch at the five furlongs, and into the home stretch Imarosebud was just ahead of Decoy Bird, with Quarterdeck, Bright Day. Zeuxis and Courageous in the next bunch. The last-named challenged the leader at the distance, but Imarosebud hung on to win by half a length. Two lengths away in a line were Quarterdeck, Zeuxis and Elicit, with Bright Day and Pale Star next. The course was a bit too hard for Quarterdeck, and Elicit would probably have won but for McDonald getting hung up in the tapes. Trial Plate Twenty-two contested the Trial Plate, and there was a double turnup. th© first and second horses carrying £lB7 and £lB9, against the I'avurites’ £1,082 and £Ol6, these latter being Paquito and Lady Spear. The favourite was slow away, but Chertsey was actually the last to leave the mark. Kinross began brilliantly and led along the back, when they had settled down. followed by Skybird, Sir Spear, Bern era, AVine Tray and Projection. Kinross was well clear crossing the top and turning for home, where he was attended by Skybird and Bernera together, with Wine Tray, Aiholspear and Sir Spear following. At the distance Wine Tray and Kinross were in the lead, but then Atholspear put in an appearance, and got up to win by a neck from Billion, with Paquito a head away. Wine Tray was right up fourth, and Bernera and Kinross next, the latter stopping badly. Paquito was most unlucky, his greenness in the early part alone preventing him winning. Bernera, too, was green, and will improve. Kinross showed a lot of pace, and apparently needed the race. January Handicap Panther literally stole the decision in the January Plandicap from Ruanui. having the last run. Ruanui (£1,261) and Panther (£792) were the best backed, with a good amount on hand for Sir Hoy. Anolo was left, and he and Sir Roy tailed the field along the back, Kilmoyler being the first to show out from Panther, Teri and Discourse. At the end of a couple of furlongs Pangolin had taken
up the running, and was attended by Teri, Full Feather, Apache, Royal Game, Panther and Ruanui. Into the straight the pacemaker was still clear, but Teri and Full Feather were closing up, and Royal Game, Apache, Ruanui and Panther were next. Over the last furlong Ruanui was in charge and he looked a good thing until a few strides from the post, when Panther came fast and got up to win by a head. A neck away was .King Midas, and Full Feather followed. Then came Anolo, Teri, Pangolin and Tcheka. It was superior generalship that enabled Panther to score over the consistent Ruanui. King Midas came from a long way back, but Full Feather had every show. Anolo, left badly at the start, finished close up. Nursery Handicap Gay Ballerina showed rare gameness to beat Equitant. The former was favourite with £1,324. while Glever (£1,063) also had many friends, there being a big drop to Night Lad (£462). while Equitant carried £233. It appeared to be an excellent start, although Semper Paratus was tailed oft! early. First to come into the picture were Tea Queen, Gay Ballerina and Francolin, and as they came on to the course proper Cuticle and Francolin were just in front of Equitant and Gay Ballerina, with Night Lad and Jazz Girl heading the others. At the distance Equitant had hii the front, but he was immediately challenged by the favourite, and the latter won eventually after a hard struggle by a head. Francolin was two lengths away third, and Admiral Drake fourth. Next home were Best Friend, Cuticle, and Jaleux. The second horse paid nearly twice as much as the winner. Reed lifted Gav Ballerina along over the last bit. and it was his vigorous ruling that beat Equitant. The latter We nt much better than at Marton. t'utlcle failed to run on. and Franklin failed to repeat his first day’s form. .Best Friend and Jaleux were closer at the finish than at any stage. Racing Club Handicap Despite the fact that he ran a good race in the Cup. Yoma was neglected the W.R.c. liandicap, and when lie 'von p;j id over a score, for lie was lhp outsider of tin' field, carrying *2Ol. Yertigern (£ 1.024) was a •'‘oiind favourite, while there was also support for Historic (£866), T he Hawk (£745), l»ink Note (£715) *nd Papatu ( C 600). The start was “gain unsatisfactory. The Hawk and
Historic getting away badly from a walk-up. Concentrate got all the best of it, and led out of the straight from Royal Saxon, Vertigern, Joy Bird, Rapine, Star Area, White Pang and Papatu. Royal Saxon headed Concentrate on the bend and was clear going into the back stretch, and passing the six he was attended in order by Concentrate, Star Area, Joy Bird, Vertigern, Rapine, Papatu, and Prickles, with Historic last. Royal Saxon was still in the van crossing the top, and he turned for home in front of Concentrate, Joy Bird, Star Area, Vertigern, Prickles, Yoma and Papatu. They were all hard at it at the false rail, where the favourite cried enough, and Historic made a run on the inner. At the distance
Yoma had joined issue, and then forged ahead, with Historic, Pink Note and White Pang chasing him. In a rattling finish Yoma v, r on by a head from Historic, while Pink Note was half a length away, a similar distance in front of White Kang. Next to finish were Royal Saxon, Papatu, Star Area and The Hawk. It was surprising to find Yoma neglected in the market. He won on his merits. Historic was again unlucky, for he was last till four furlongs from home. He is an early winner. Pink Note finished strongly, and so, too, did White Pang, this pair being closest at the finish. Royal Saxon again went well, and Papatu and The Hawk were also in the picture toward the end, with the latter beaten at the start. Douro Cup The Douro Cup was a scrambling sort of affair, Gold Cure finally winning easily from a big bunch. The winner was favourite with £826, but at a fine price, while another to come in for support was Royal Lineage (£819), with a drop to Llanore (£486). Great Star, the second horse, carried £212, and paid half as much gain as the winner. It was a great start, and when they had settled down Great Star was in charge from Royal Lineage, Llanore, Teremoana, Millais, Gold Dawn and Gold Cure. Great Star was three lengths clear as they filed across the top, a very strungout field, and he turned for home still clear of Llanore, Gold Dawn, Royal Lineage, Millais and Geld Cure. The last-named did it remarkably well up the straight and had little difficulty in winning by half a length. There was a great battle for second money between Great Star, Latin Quarter, Stanchion, King’s Jest, High Falutin*, Gold Dawn and Millais, and the first two gained the minor placings, with the others almost in line. The winner won with ridiculous ease, and is evidently a good sort. Millais was heavily booted, and that stopped him. Stanchion and High Palutiri’ were a bit unlucky, the latter being the last to leave the barrier. Metropolitan Handicap The sprint saw the two favourites, Silver Paper (£1,506) and Childsplay (£1,405), first and second, with the outsider, Lysander, third. Childsplay and Cimabue were the first to show out, but approaching the course proper Money Mine and Cimabue had charge from Childsplay, Silver Mine, Awarere, Miss Pat and Lysander. At the distance Silver Paper and Childsplay drew out, and Lysander threw out a stiff challenge, a good finish seeing Childsplay win by a neck, with Lysander half a length away third, two lengths in front of Cimabue. Next to cross the line were Silver Mine, Miss Pat, Ridgemount and Arrow Lad. Childsplay and Silver Paper ran up to their best form, the former’s be--ginning qualities winning for her. Lysander was a bit unlucky, his rider making his effort a bit too late, for ho was going better than the pair in front at the end. Cimabue and Silvermine went fair races, and so did the big outsider, Money Mine. Camp Handicap Knightlike (£1,362), Grand Acre (£1,182), Quantum (£1,173) and Royal Duke (£760) were the best backed in the final event, while Moutoa Wonder (£359) was a big outsider and gave his supporters nearly a double-figure return for second. When they were let go, after some delay, Star Raid, Grand Acre, Shortly and Australis were among the early leaders, and Grand Acre, Australis, Royal Duke. The Dove, Moiitoa Wonder and Quantum were prominent at the course entrance. Prom here Royal Duke and Grand Acre went away, but the latter compounded at the furlong post, and Royal Duke went on to win by a head from Moutoa Wonder, who came with a rattle. Quantum was a length and a-half back third, and next were Knightlike, Smithereens, Australis and Shrewd. Has the speed if she can reproduce » An improving sort is Sir Mond, and a share of the stake money should come his way. # Nothing has worked in better style at Ellerslie than Lady’s Boy, and providing he can go with Vallar in the early stages there is every likelihood that he will beat the chestnut over the last 100 yards. High Finance is speedy, too, and should add more interest to the race. Were ho at the top of his form, Parfait Amour would give the others something to do in the Trial Stakes to-morrow. However, he may be in want of a race. To Money is cherry ripe and ran very consistently at Ellerslie at Christmas. She has her chance- in the Ferry Handicap to-morrow'. Polyxena has a ton of speed, and backers will just about fall over themselves to be with Jamieson’s representative to-morrow. More so in view of the fact that Gay Ballerina, who was responsible for Polyxena’s defeat at Ellerslie, was again a winner, this time at Trentham, where he carried a regular poultice for a two-year-old. Bizarro is by Absurd, and the contention formed by many is that he will not go nine furlongs. Just wait and see, and you will be left lamenting. 8 s * * Glena Bay looked at Ngaruawahia as if a race would do him good, but nevertheless the son of Borneo made a creditable showing in the Cup, and was practically in line with R.egent, who finished a head behind Star Comet. Glena Bay figures in the list for the Orewa High-weight Handicap and should race prominently. Star Comet ran a sound race in the Ngaruawahia Cup last Saturday, and although beaten at the finish by the improved Hakanoa, his performance suggested that the Day Comet gelding will soon be among the winners. Star Comet is nicely placed in the Hauraki Hack Handicap. Palmares was showing up sufficiently well in his race at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day to suggest that he will soon be claiming the attention of the man in the box. The grey gelding lias a handy impost in the Ferry Handicap, and will be difficult to dispose of. Brilliant Light, the promising gelding from J. T. Jamieson’s Papakura establishment, was a strong fancy at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day in his engagement, and while beaten out of a place ran a creditable race. The Ferry Handicap at Takapuna should give Brilliant Light an opportunity to shine. Jolly Money, in two, but expected to run in the 2£ealandia Handicap, should make a good showing in that class. Ho is just out of hacks, and it. will be interesting to see how he performs in better company. Mussie did not win at Thames, but she was off colour, due in most part to soreness. Produced fit and well, the hacks in the Ferry Handicap will have to do something to beat her. Desert Glow won the Cup two years ago, and there is every reason to expect him to win it again to-morrow. He has been working well, and has a handy weight. What more is wanted? Brampton was taken to Ngaruawahia last Saturday and given a run in the
chief event on the card, in which his trainer expected him to make a bold showing. He drew the rails, tut was chopped out at the start and got a bad passage, but three furlongs from nome was in a handy position. The Lord Quex gelding could not come on in the run home, although lie was hot far back at the box. The Hauraki mile at Takapuna should suit J. Buchanan's represen ta ti ve.
