LEAVING FOR ENGLAND

MR. SKEATES FARWELLED BY BRIDGE ASSOCIATION ENERGETIC PRESIDENT Saying that he was leaving on February 15 for England, and that it was doubtful whether he would return, Mr. E. G. Skeates, Mayor of Birkenhead, and president of the Auckland Harbour Bridge Association, asked, at last evening’s meeting of the committee of the association, for leave of absence until the next general meeting in April, when a new president could be elected. The vice-president, Mr. G. O'Hailoran, moved that the leave be granted, and proposed a resolution in which he thanked Mr. Skeates for all the bard work which he had done, both in founding and in carrying on the association. He wished Mr. and Mrs. Skeates the best of good fortune in England, and hoped that they would finally make up their minds to return to New Zealand. Mr. A. Marks seconded the resolution, which was carried by acclamation, and Mr. M. Blampied also spoke. In reply, Mr. Skeates thanked the committee, and spoke at length of the difficulties which had already been overcome and of the difficulties which had still to be overcome before the bridge could become an accomplished fact. He had no doubt, however, that it was one of the most pressing needs of Auckland, and that it would not be long before it was built.
