GOVERNMENT AND SWIMMING

WELLINGTON has decided to ** fall into line with Canterbury in urging upon the Government of New Zealand the need for a greater expenditure on the teaching of swimming in schools than has hitherto been done, writes THE SUN’S Wellington correspondent. It is proposed that Cabinet shall be asked to increase the grant to the New Zealand Association for this purpose to £I,OOO per annum, and also to further urge that swimming shall be as a compulsory subject in those schools where facilities are available. It was also decided that an attempt shall be made to impress upon members of Parliament the gravity of the fact that so few people can swim in this country.
