HUNTLY TOWN BOARD PROGRESS OF ROAD WORK (From Our Own Correspondent J HUNTLY, To-day.’ Mr. A. A. Woodward. consulting engineer to the ILuntly Town Board, was present at the ordinary meeting of that body on Tuesday evening. The chairman, Mr. E. George, presided. In a report on the progress of the bituminous sealing of the road through bluntly Mr. Woodward stated that the whole of the foundation work was completed and one mile 26 chains of sealing, of which 26 chains in the herat of the town, is the full width of the road, leaving one mile on the north end, am# one mile 49 chains at the south end, to complete. It is expected to complete the full area about March 16. Expenditure so far has been £5,160 in which is included the cost of most of the bitumen required, and a small portion of the Ttiakau metal. Summarised the position is as follows: Expenditure to date (22/1/29) . £5,160 Cost of metal yet required .. £1,509 Freight on metal £9BO Estimated labour and carting . £1,700 Extra bitumen £175 Hire of plant £297i Total - .. £10,1121 In conclusion the engineer stated that the work so far as completed is very satisfactory, though the progress is slower than anticipated on account of the plant being unsuitable for country work, but it is the best obtainable. He also remarked that the work necessitated diverting motorists from the Great South Koad for various areas, but this was entirely unavoidable. He paid a graceful tribute to service-car drivers for their co-opera-tion in willingly assisting the contractors in their arduous work of keeping the . heavy traffic moving. A request from the Ratepayers’ and Citizens’ Association for slot phones in various areas of the town did not meet with general approval,- though it was recognised that a central slotmachine would be. a great convenience. The taxi-stand is to be removed to the open space between the Town Half and J. Powell s billiard-room.

FINALS AT ELLERSLIE THE LOVER IMPRESSES OVER SEVEN FURLONGS VALLAR DOES NICELY A miserable morning greeted trainers at lullerslit; to-day, showery weather prevailing throughout tile pre-break-fast work, and making things anything but pleasant. However, climatic conditions took a turn for the better after the interval. In addition to the course proper—the trestles were out 2 5 feet —mentors also had the use of number one grass, but it was on the former track that all the gallops worth recording took place. Best efforts of the. morning were cm" .od to The Lover who put up a rattling good gallop over seven furlongs, while of the sprinters Vallar, also from the same stable, movc-fl pleasingly over live furlongs. Course Proper Cold Money led Eager Rose . over five furlongs in 1.8, both moving comfortably. For the last seven furlongs of a mile Zircon and Thursby recorded 1.38'1-5, the former having a bit the bettor of his companion over the final furlong. Beau Cavalier ran seven furlongs in 1.35. and was finishing strongly. Miss Myrtle moved at a good threequarter pace over six furlongs, v. nile Sir Mend also executed a similar task. Gold Blend was seen to more advantage than Optimistic when this pair strode home from the half-mile post in 53. Gold Blend undoubtedly has speed, but may not stand a thorough preparation. Interesting Gallop Three horses, namely. The Lover, Corinax and Sleepy Sol, galloped seven furlongs in company in impressive fashion. They moved out very fast, and that there was to be no loitering on the journey was evident from the 12 1-5 recorded for the initial furlong. Two furlongs were passed over in 24. three in 37, the first half-mile in 51 3-5, and at the post, where The Lover (on the inside) had a length and a-half to the good, the watch finished up in 1.31 4-5, a very creditable achievement. Having 7.0 in the Takapuna Cup. The Lover will appeal as the most likely of the light-weight division. AVar Officer was partnered with Brampton from the mile post, but the former went away from his companion and finished alone in 1.47 3-5. Subsequently War Officer was noticed to be very lame. Vallar jumped away at the fivefurlong barrier, but that he was not being’ required to show his speed was apparent when the first two furlongs were passed over in 25. and the full distance covered in 1.5 1-5. The
Valkyrian gelding could have done a lor belter, for he was under a steady hold throughout. Kaiwanga proved of r.o us-- to Baby Bun when this pair were associated over seven furlongs in 1.34 1-5. the last six furlongs taking 1.-2 4-5. K - wflngß is u hopeless case whenever the turf is inclined to be greasy, and that told against her. Cup Candidate Hyde Park was sent ;i mile, and travelling nicely covered the last >cv- r. furlongs in 1.34 4-5. Mon Star join' d in over tho last six furlongs. Hyde Park is very well just now. Odin and Palmares were to have gone together over five furlongs, but the former jumped away lengths ahead of his companion, and eame home in I.S 4-5, Palmares registering 1.7 1-5. Knight Town, with a fair weight on top, led Roman Pearl and Critique our six furlongs in 1.22 4-5, the first three taking 40. , After breakfast Bahama easily beat Spear Dance over seven lurlongs in 1.32 4-5. Bizarro was asked to go a mile, being brought home over the last six furlongs bv Diamond Queen. Bizarro was ridden out over the final stages to record 1.33 3-5 tor the last seven furlongs. Xothing has been galloping more consistently at Kllersiie than Lady’s Boy, who was again responsible for a pleasing effort when he dashed over five furlongs in 1.5. 3-5, the first two furlongs in 25. Lady's Boy was assisted by Bennie, who had at least three lengths the worst of the argument at the end. Lady’s Boy carried close on 9.0, and that makes his gallop all tho more convincing. The Jumpers Harbour View (R. Olive), negotiated three schooling hurdles in fair fashion. Sulla, later ridden by the same jockey, also having a lesson over the fences. Ho jumped slowly and carefully, and lias room for improvement.
