Aussie May Meet Limerick In Hazlett Stakes

The latest from the Far South i; to the effect that Aussie has been ac corded a nomination for the Hazlet Memorial Plate, a mile event a. weight-for-age, without • penalties, t< be .run on the second day of the Dun edin meeting next month. This is one of the most interest ing items of turf news announced fo some time. It had been previousl; mentioned, of course, but owner

trainer George Paul was credited with having said that lie had never given the proposal a thought. However, the fact remains that Aussie has been entered for the race at Wingatui, and there appears to be every indication

that he will make the trip South. At present he is at Trentham with other members of the team from Te Awamutu. The presence of Aussie and Limerick in the Hazlett Memorial field will invest the contest with a. great deal of interest, for there is no doubt as to the brilliancy of the Fort a fix gelding. Just liow good lie will prove to be over a mile in the very highest class, as represented by Limerick, remains to be seen. With Limerick at his best, it would be too much for even Auckland’s sprinting idol to expect to keep up. Nevertheless, if Aussie is taken South, no one will begrudge the Dunedin Jockey Club the good fortune in being able to stage such a duel. Of course, there are sure to be other good ones in the Hazlett Memorial, but for tlie moment most interest is focussed upon Aussie and Limerick in that event. It is considered probable that Aussie, will go to Wingatui, but it is not questioned that George Paul has more than one iron in the fire. First, of all, it is known that Aussie could, be bought at a good figure. Secondly, there is a trip to Australia in prospect, and against Limerick his owner-trainer would get an excellent line on how his horse would fare on the other side. It must be remembered, too, that Aussie is now right up in the weights, and it is going to be difficult to place him to win a decent handicap.
