“TIN POT” SECTIONS

_ —— CONVERSION TO PLAYGROUND MOUNT ROSKILL BOARD MEETING The proposal to obtain authority to sell a number of small reserves and to devote the proceeds toward the establishment of one large playing area met with the approval of the Mount Roskill Road Board at its meeting last evening. Mr. G. E. Tansley, who introduced the question, said that there was a large number of “tin-pot” sections dotted all over the district which could not be put to any useful public purpose. They were merely growing noxious weeds to the annoyance of residents. An application which had recently been made to have these sections transferred from the Crown to the board had met with the approval of the Crown Lands officials, and the machinery for their sale by the board already existed on the Statute Book. On his suggestion it was agreed that Messrs. W. J. Jordan and G. G« Munns, M.P.’s, be requested to support the proposal for the sale of the small reserves when the question is brought before the House next session. The residents of Ridge Road, having notified their willingness to be specially rated for a water service in that area, the board's engineer submitted an estimate of the cost of reticulation, amounting to £3,370. This is to be submitted to the ratepayers for their approval. The chairman. Mr. E. F. Jones, extended a cordial welcome to Mr. R W. Sanft. the newly- elected member of the board, who took his seat for the ; first time. i It was decided to continue the observance of the weekly half-holiday on Saturdays throughout the district. The board’s engineer reported that everything was in readiness to proceed with the raising of a loan of £62,000 for the drainage of the we stern area, and it was decided to advertise the board's intention to apply to the Government Loans Board for its approval before submitting the question to a poll of ratepayers. Mr. S. I. Goodall drew attention to what he called the unfair treatment of the Onehunga Borough Council in charging for the board’s refuse by measurement instead of by weight. He contended that the board was losing £2 a week thereby, and on his motion it was agreed to confer with the district health officer with the object of obtaining his sanction to establish a suitable dumping area, and so discontinue the present practice of sending the refuse to the Onehunga destructor. The general account is £7,643 in debit. The board’s engineer reported that the Auckland City Council had completed the reconstruction of The Drive (a boundary road), which was now in good condition for traffic.. Since the board’s last meeting building permits have been granted for nine dwellings of a value totalling £5,757, and a block of shops costing £6,700. It was resolved that the statutory penalty of 10 per cent, be added to all overdue rates, including the water rate. Mr. S. Scarborough was appointed to the Finance Committee, vice Mr. T. Davies, resigned, Mr. A. Roberts taking Mr. Scarborough’s place on the Works Committee. Mr. R. W. Sanft was elected a member of the Reserves and Town-planning committee.
