Science Congress
OPENING TO-MORROW I BIG PROGRAMME ARRANGED To-morrow, this year’s congress of the New Zealand Institute of Science will open at the Auckland University College. It will be attended by delegates from all parts of the Dominion, and is expected to be productive of interesting and important business. Members of the New Zealand Institute who plan to attend meetings and entertainments are invited to enrol at the Auckland University' - College. Princes Street, to-morrow between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The inaugural meeting of the congress will be held in the UniversityCollege Hall at S p.m., when the president of the New Zealand Institute, Mr. B. C. Aston, will deliver the opening address. The Deputy'-Mayor, Mr. A. J. Entriean, and the president of the Auckland Institute, Mr. IT. E. Vaile. will also speak. Earlier in the day-, however, congress members will assemble at the University College, the hour having been fixed at 10 a.m. Badges and programmes will be issued, after which the visitors will be the guests of the Council of the Auckland Institute and Museum at morning tea in the rooms of Messrs. Milne and Choy-ce. At 1.30 p.m. the visitors will be shown the War Memorial Museum, and at 3 p.m. they will be the guests of the Auckland Racing Club at Ellerslie. On tlie occasion of the opening meeting in the evening the Hector Memorial Medal will be presented to Dr. D. M. Y. Sbmerville, Professor of Mathematics at Victoria University College. Features of the-remaining programme are: Friday: Sectional meetings in the morning and afternoon. In the evening Professor Benham, of the Otago University, will lecture on “The Inheritance of Mental Qualities.” Saturday: Sectional meetings, excursion to the Waitakeres and launch trip on the harbour; social evening at the University College. Sunday: Special service in the evening at St. Mary’s Cathedral, where the Rev. Canon‘Archdall will preach. Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Vaile have invited .the visitors to their home, “Glade Hall,’ Epsom. Monday*: Evening address by- Dr. E. Kidson, Dominion Meteorologist, on “Forecasting Weather.” Sectional meetings during the day. Tuesday: Sectional meeting and excursion to Rangitoto; close of conference. The Remuera Bowling Club has invited those visitors who are bowlers to use its greens during their stay. Each day notices announcing tlie following day’s meetings will be posted at the University College. The congress is divided into the following six sections: Phy*sics and chemistry, under the presidency of Dr. W. P. Evans: geology and Dr. J. Henderson; biology', Dr. W. B. Benham: agriculture and forestry, i Professor G. S. Peren; anthropology I and history, Mr. H. D. Skinner: and social science and. economics, Professor A. IL Xocker.. .
