Henna Leads Them To The Post in Cup

SPRINT TO RIDGEMOUNT RACING AT ASHHURST (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON X., Monday. The annual meeting of the Ashhurst Racing Club was held to-day in line but windy weather. The fixture proved a complete success, the totalisator returns showing an increase of £2,534. The victory of the Foxton candidate, Henna, in the Cup race, was very popular, for the mare has proved most consistent. The shorter distance event went to the Taranaki representative, Ridgemount. Hack Hurdles Locarno was favourite from the opening of the machine in the Hurdles, and he eventually wound up a firm favourite from Lin Arlington, with lesser money for Atareria. The favourite was early in the van and jumping beautifully, drew right away over the las. half-mile to win by 10 lengths from Lin Arlington,, who weakened over the lust pinch. Cold Air was five lengths further back, third, with K burant and Atareria next to finish. It was a striking performance on the part of the winner. Maiden Stakes The two-division race, the Maiden Stakes, was avoided. Inflame was installed a firm favourite from Bione and Marica. The selection proved corerct, for the trio filled the placings, although Bione just cut out Vanilla in the last stride. Inflame led throughout from Sambur, Marica, Tunbridge and Mint Belle, Bione having been slow to move. The favourite was never troubled to win easing up by four lengths from Marica, who was a length and a-half clear of Bione. The latter was a head in front of Vanilla, a longpriced candidate. Sambur, Mint Belle. Merry Mixture and Basaloma were next. Pohangi na Handicap Epistle was the only defection from the Poliangina Handicap, in which Ridgemount was backed down to a very short price. Aided by No. 1 position at the barrier, and smart to jump out, the favourite never gave his backers any concern, turning for home ahead of The Raider, with White Ringlet ahead of Dobbin, Lady Ideal, Miss Pat and Moutoa Treasury, Callanmore having been slow to begin. The Raider challenged in the run home, but the favourite held him off to win by half a lengt-h, White Ringlet being four lengths further back in third place. Dobbin was fourth,, with Miss Pat ami Moutoa Treasury next. T. Metcalfe had liis first ride since his accident when he piloted Moutoa Treasury. Siberia Handicap Warfille dominated the market in the Siberia Handicap, with Monetize next in favour, but an upset eventuated. Shining Star and Abbey Queen lighting out the finish. Golden . Shadow and Tutira led out of the barrier, but Abbey Queen ran up to Golden Shadow and the pair led Shining Star, Grey Mist, Warfille and Bon Acre into the straight. Golden Shadow retired at the distance, Shining Star getting up to beat Abbey Queen by half a length, with necks separating Dermod, Warfille and Grey Mist. The winner was recently purchased by the Awapuni trainer, H. H. Doyle. Ashhurst Cup Kalos was an absentee from the Ashhurst Cup, in which Anolo, stable companion to Ridgemount, was the public’s fancy, he carrying almost twice as much money as Lady Limond and Henna. Nucleus and Maui were the early leaders, but Lady Limond went to the front passing the stands, being joined by Iveddar six furlongs from home. This pair led Imperial Spark. Maui and Nucleus to the turn, where Anolo was disappointed on the rails. Henna commenced her fun when heads were straightened out and the mare wore the leaders down to win by a length from Imperial Spark, with Anolo a neck back. Keddar was fourth, with Nucleus and Lady Limond next. Komako Handicap Defections reduced the field in the Komako Handicap to eight runners, in which Chopin was preferred to Cloyne and Gold Bag, but backers of the favourite enjoyed but a short run, Chopin stumbling at the jump-out to unseat his rider. Cloyne and Voipian took up the running from Merry Mixture, Aurora Borealis, Keen and Gold Bag. Going along the back the leaders turned for home on terms, ahead of Merry Mixture and Aurora Borealis. Cloyne stayed on better in the run home to win by two lengths from Volplane, with a gap of a length and a-half back to Merry Mixture. Gold Bag was fourth, with Aurora Borealis next. Raumai Handicap Only six runners went to the post for the Raumai Handicap, Kalos, Maui and Wilderness being absentees. Kilmezzo wound up a shade the better favourite from The Swell, with a drop to Moutoa Treasury, who was making her second appearance. Road Hog and The Swell led along the back from Kilmezzo, Imperial Spark and the two leaders turned for home ahead of Imperial Spark and Moutoa Treasury. In the straight The Swell drew away, but had to be shaken up to stall off a late challenge by Moutoa Treasury, a short half-length separating them. Kilmezzo was a neck back, third, with Imperial Spark fourth. Manawatu Handicap A field of a dozen runners lined up for the Manawatu Gorge Handicap, lhe bracketed pair, King Quex and Charmaline, were preferred to Ballon, with a drop to Kilorell. Considerable jostling at the turn going out of the straight enabled Rakauponga, Heather Blend and Wilmoreana to gain an advantage and the trio led from Delude along the back, with the favoured in the rear. A slashing finish saw Wilmoreana beat Raukaponga by a head, the latter coming again when apparently beaten. Delude was a length and a-half back, third, while Charmalinegot up to take fourth placing from Mothplane. Following are the results:— in*i ac ? Nurdies, miles.—l Locarno, 10.4, A.
