Farrell’s Triumph

RETAINS MEN’S SPRINT

Quest for Swimming Titles

WAITEMATA Club swimmer J. P. Farrell is still men's champion of Auckland over 100 yards. East evening, at the championships, he scored a decisive win over a field which did not trouble the champion to the expected extent. Gordon Bridson failed by two seconds in his official attempt to break L. Kronfeld’s 220 yards salt-water record.

Farrel, only 19 years old, scored a great triumph. It was his dash over the last lap which beat the veteran, Jack Enwright, who surprised all by heading younger hopes home.

But the time, 60 l-ss, is not outstanding. There is a poor prospect for Auckland in the New Zealand Championships, when W. Cameron, of Wellington, can break 575, and N. Dowsett, of Wanganui, 58s.

The Helensville flyer, R. H. Sellars, reached third place after a game effort. The disappointment of the race was D. Plank. But, as The Sun predicted, it

was somewhat too early to expect him to win a title.

Gordon Bridson, although lie could not break the record in the furlong, swam valiantly. R. de Loree, of Mount Eden, was the only other swimmer to trouble Bridson. Peggy Robertson, of Parnell, cap-

tured the girls’ intermediate 100 yards easily. She proved her superiority as an intermediate swimmer. NEW ZEALAND RECORD Ena Stockley’s excellent time of 78 2-5 s in the women’s 100 yards backstroke, in which she was the only entrant, will stand as a New Zealand record. Up to last evening, no time had stood for the race. Miss Stockley clipped nearly two seconds off the time in which she won the event in the Australian championships two years ago. In a thrilling race, Dorothy Grant, of Grammar, survived Edna Champion’s challenge in the women’s quarter mile. N. K. Sylow was in excellent form and Avon the men’s 220 yards breaststroke simply. When the Dominion championships are on, unfortunately, he will be on holiday in Australia. IV. Hassan had a close win in the diving over his Ponsonby. club mate, Barry Young, formerly of New South Wales. A Whangarei boy, A. Walker, won the junior boys’ 100 yards in good style, but the winners of the intermediate boys’ 100 yards and 220 yards, L. Smythe and J. Speight, did not make impressive times. The chief handicap race, the women’s 66 2-3 yards, was remarkable for the struggle for third place between Ena Stockley and Doris Magee, both off scratch. Miss Stockley won by a itouch.

Coach D. B. Anderson has reason for satisfaction. He coached the placed men in the men’s sprint, and three other title holders, Misses E. Stockley, P. Robertson and D. Grant. Competition was close the whole evening*, an d th e capacity attendance was satisfied. East time was placed to the credit of Miss S. Grange, winner of the junior girls’ 50 yards, and Miss Jean Thomson, title-holder of the girls’ intermediate 220 yards breaststroke also clocked well, in spite of the fact that she was only paced. Details: — 100YDS INTERMEDIATE BOYS Holder, P. Brownlee; New Zealad record, 58 2-ss, W. Cameron (Wellington;. L. Smythe (Ponsonby) 1 R. Pidgeon (Parnell) - R. Thomas (Grammar) o Time, 67 l-ss.

Also: A. Lockie, R. Gee (Waitemata), W. Stockley (Grammar), H. Davey (Mount Eden). Smythe and Pidgeon shot out to the front immediately and soon showed that they were the contestants between whom the decision lay. Pidgeon tried strenuously to keep up with Smythe, but the Ponsonby hoy, aided by a powerfull kick, had sufficient in reserve to win by a yard. Thomas was a good third. 100YDS MEN Holder, J. P. Farrell: Auckland and New Zealand record, 57 2-5.5, 3ST. Dowsett (Wanganui). J. P. Farrell (Waitemata) 1 .T. Enwright (Waitemata) 2 R. H. Sellars (Ilelensville) 5 Time, 60 l-*ss. Also: D. Plank, C. Hound (Mt. Eden), L. Fairgray (Waitemata). Enwright, with the experience of many championships behind him, had much the better of the start and crowded on the pace, with Farrell keeping almost stroke for stroke with him on the other side of the pool. Sellars was also much in evidence in a wildly fought first lap. Sellars made a brilliant turn for the second, with Farrell and Enwright a question of inches behind. Plank, Hound and Fairgray were makng heavy weather of the race and at this stage did not give any sign of troubling the leading trio, barrell, Sellars and Enwright continued a fierce struggle every inch of _ the distance for another 50 yards. A third of the way on the last lap, Farrell was putting every ounce of energy into his strokes and made a clear break from Enwright, who was forging ahead of Sellars. Then Farrell produced a typical burst of speed and won decisively by four feet. Sellars was less than a yard away in third place, then came Plank, Hound and b air gray, hopelessly out of the running. 440 Y DS WOMEN Holder, Miss D. Grant; Auckland and New Zealand record, 6m Ss, Miss Gwitha Shand (Canterbury). Miss D. Grant (Grammar) .... 1 Miss E. Champion (Mt. Eden) .. 2 Time, 6m 20 2-ss. Miss Grant began briskly and soon had a big lead on Miss Champion, the challenger, who was contenting herself with steady swimming. At the end of the first lap Miss Grant was four yards ahead, and the race promised to become a drab affair. Miss Grant began to flag slightly after another two laps and the challenger was making better headway. With three lengths to go, the title-holder was only a yard clear. Another lap, and Miss Grant was making the pace frantically, with Miss Champion clinging tenaciously to the leader. Coming up to the last turn before the stretch of a few yards to the rope, the holder was only a foot in the lead and it seemed likely that the steady challenger would catch up in time. Miss Grant’s turn was better, however, and she touched the rope IS inches ahead of Miss Champion in a thrilling finish. 100YDS INTERMEDIATE GIRLS Holder, Miss E. Champion; Auckland and New Zealand record, lm S 4-ss, Miss D. Magee. Miss P. Robertson (Parnell) .. .. 1 Miss M. Smith (Waitemata) .... 2 Miss S. Denham (Ponsonby) .... 3 Time, 69 2-ss. Also: Miss D. Harvey (Parnell). Miss Robertson’s win was the easiest of the evening. She went to the front at the start and was not troubled at any stage. Slie beat Miss Smith by five yards and Miss Denham was another four yards back. 50YDS JUNIOR GIRLS Holder, Miss M. Smith; Auckland and New Zealand record, 32 2-ss, Miss H. Coutts. Miss S. Grange (Mt. Eden) .. .. 1 Miss M. Elworth (Devonport) .... 2 Miss A. Boughtwood (Parnell) .. 3 Time, 33 2-ss. Also: Miss M. Sadler (Mt. Eden). Miss Grange led all the way and won simply by four feet. Miss Boughtwood was another four feet back. 100YDS JUNIOR BOYS Holder, S. Gardiner; Auckland record, lm 11 2-ss, A. Baird; New Zealand record, lm 6 3-os, D. Olds (Otago). A. Walker (Whangarei) 1 S. Gardiner (Ponsonby) 2 T. Strong (Helensville) 3 Tme, lm 12 2-ss. Also: J. Sellars (Helensville), A. Bennett (Devonport). Gardiner, the holder, was easily displaced by a newcomer, Walker, who dashed to the front and was not overtaken. Over the last few yards "Walker was exhausted, but managed to win by two yards. 75YDS BREASTSTROKE, INTERMEDIATE GIRLS Holder, Miss .J. Thomson; Auckland and New Zealand record, lm 5 2-ss, Miss M. Rydon. Miss J. Thomson (Parnell) .. .. 1 Time, lm 6 l-ss. Miss Thomson was not opposed, but went within a second of the record when she was paced by J. Magee. 220YDS BREASTSTROKE, MEN Holder, N. K. Sylow; New Zealand record, 3m 4 3-ss, N. K. Sylow. N. K. Sylow (Ponsonby) .. .. 1

Lowe and Ansell fell back steadily and Sylow won by just over half the length of the baths. Ansell was 11 yards further back. 100YDS BACKSTROKE. WOMEN Miss E. Stockley (Grammar) 1 Time, Ira IS 2-ss. Bridson swam masterfully, even if he did not approach his unofficial record time sot up List week. De Loree. who did wisely in saving himself for the race and not competing in the 100yds, scored the second triumph of the race. It was really a tussle between Bridson and De Loree, with the champion generally a yard ahead the whole distance. Enwright was close up at the start. He fell back in line with Farrell later, and then picked up over the last lap to finish five vards behind de Lor* j, who was a yard back from Bridson. Farrell and Plank were well back, decisively beaten. 220 Y DS INTERMEDIATE BOYS Holder, P. Brow nlee; Auckland and New Zealand record, 2m 355, G. Bridson. J. Speight (Parnell) 1 L. Smythe (Ponsonby) 2 J. H. Davey (Mt. Eden) 3 Time, 2m 55 2-ss. Also: R. Thomas (Grammar), R. Pidgeon (Parnell), R. Gee (Waitemata). The race was dull and was cut out in slowtime.
