LINER HARD AND FAST
OFF COAST OF FLORIDA PASSENGERS ALL SAFE (Australian■ and N.Z. Fress Association) NEW YORK, Sunday. The Dollar liner President Garfield is solidly aground fore a%d aft on the Mantanilla Shoal, east of Point Jupiter, Florida. The captain of the Munson liner Pan America, 13,712 tons, reports that the passengers, baggage and mail are being transferred from the President Garfield to liis steamer. The weather is excellent and he is standing by the stranded vessel. The President Garfield went ashore early this morning. At first her wireless messages gave no indication of the nature of the trouble. Furthermore, her position was erroneously stated. However, this was corrected later. The liner was on the way to Havana. She left New York on Thursday on a cruise round the world. Later news states that the passengers and mail have been safely transferred to the Pan America. Five naval vessels from southern ports are hurrying to the assistance of the President Garfield. Apparently she is in no immediate danger. The President Garfield, a steel twinscrew steamer of 10,558 tons, was built at New York in 1921 for the Dollar Steam Ship Company and is fitted for oil fuel. Her port of registry is San Francisco.
