MECHANICS ORDEAL
THREE DAYS’ QUESTIONING GARAGE MURDER SUSPECT (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Monday. Jn connection with the murder of Mr. Vivian Messiter, aged 55, Southampton manager of an American oil company, whose body was found in his garage on January 11, the police detained for examination William F. Thomas, motor mechanic, aged 32. The interrogation of Thomas by the police at Southampton was one of the longest in the history of crime. It was begun on Friday afternoon and ended on Sunday. Two detectives then arrived to take Thomas back to Manchester in connection with a missing motor-car. It is understood that witnesses failed to identify Thomas as a man who had been seen talking to Mr. Messiter. Miss Hambledon, the golden-haired woman with whom Thomas had resided at Southampton, was also questioned, and then returned to her home.
