“RIGGER”

North Shore are staging no trials ■until their new boats arrive from Melbourne. The consignment is on the way, and should be in Shore’s shed by the end of the month. Another meeting to consider the arrangements for running the Stuart Reid eights will be held this evening. • * * The A.R.A. executive committee meets to-morrow evening, when further news of arrangements in regard to the Wha.li course will be to hand. J t all entries arrive in time, positions .*or Hamilton will be drawn this evenrig. Hamilton has asked that a member of the A.R.A. be present at the J rawing t.. represent the city, but this « hardly possible. Rumours that D. Smith may row for ?hore seniors appear to be without foundation. * * * In conjunction with the Tamaki Yacht Club’s fixture, to be held on Saturday, a no-class inter-club fours race is planned for the Nixon Cup. The course is from St. Heliers to Kuhimarama wharf. * * * "Work has been proceeding apace on the association eights, which are now iu excellent order. Waitemata members are unusually keen when repair work is scheduled. and lately R. Kearon, an energetic person, has repaired all the trestles in the shed. NO-CLASS EIGHTS City oarsmen aro greeting the noclass eights, which Hamilton has included in its programme, with no great enthusiasm. The conditions stipulate that no club can enter unless it has a crew entered for the senior fours. This means that only Tauranga, Hamilton. Waitemata, and Shore can line up for the start. Waitemata is not viewing the race with favour, and Tauranga is not likely to enter a crew. Shore has decided to enter, and so the race will probably be a straight-out go between the two clubs. In any case, it is doubtful whether the A.R.A. will be able to make the necessary arrangements to transport the eights to Hamilton. Opinions are divided on this point as much as they aro on the wisdom of staging the race. One astute Aucklander has noticed that the conditions stipulate that competing clubs must have a crew “entered” for the senior fours. Though his club is not entering for the main event, he considers that the entry fee for the race might be worth a place in the scramble for a set of practise oars. Unfortunately, this loophole did not occur to him until it was too late. The conditions do not specify that clubs must race in the senior fours before they can compete in the eights. It will be interesting to see how Kami!* on gets along with its unwieldy programme. AT PICTON The programme for the championship regatta, to be held at Picton on February 23, will be as follows: 10 a.m., champion fours, two miles: 10.45 a m., maiden fours, one mile; '11.15 a.m.. junior pairs, one mile; 11.45 a.m., champion single sculls, one and a-half miles: 12.15 p.m., maiden fours, for crews lOst and under, one mile: 1.30 p.m., champion pairs, one and a-half miles: 2 p.m., jur ior fours, one and a-half miles; 2.30 p.m., youths’ fours, one mile: 3 p.m.. champion double sculls, one and a-half miles: 3.30 p.m., maiden pairs, one mile: 4 p.m., Marlborough Plate, open to all crews except winners of champion fours, one and a-half miles. The prize money is £175. All that is necessary now is a fine day.

the Picton harbour being notable for its capricious behaviour. Aucklanders’ interest will be, of course, focussed on the meeting between Stevenson and Jackson. No crews will be entered from the city. HAMILTON OFFICIALS Local officials at the Hamilton regatta will be: Starter, Mr. H. H. Buchanan: umpires, Mr. IT. 11. Buchanan and Mr. E. Ander: judges, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M.. and Mr. A. G. Ross; handicapper, Mr. H. U. Buchanan; clerk of the scales, Mr. S. Davis. AUCKLAND “AT HOI’.E” Auckland’s jubilee 4 At Home” will bo held on Saturday. The main attraction is trial fours for the president’s trophies. It was intended to put on a race for the Caro Cup double sculls. Owing to the necessity for packing regatta boats for Hamilton, this race has had to be postponed. To fill the gap in the programme, one of the (Tub’s eights will row beside the fours in the final of the trial fours. There will be dancing and afternoon tea for those whose attention strays from rowing. Entries for the fours will close at 2.15 p.m.

HAMILTON PROSPECTS Waitemata. is going to have another fling at the senior fours next Tuesday. The crew will be Ivruse (str.), Brooker, W. Stevenson, Uruickshank (bow). Kruse is a brother of W. Kruse, bow in Wanganui Union’s champion four. Other Waitemata crews for Hamilton, additional to those already published in The Sun, are: Maiden pairs, J. Beasley (str.), R. Smith (bow). West End is sending only its light maidens to the river regatta. The crew is: F. Conway (str.), A. Laurence, I. Blomfield, N. Ganley (bow). Conway is also having a tilt at the handicap singles. His most doughty opponent will bo W. Stevenson. Haylock having strained his shoulder, and E. Such being unable to leave town, the heavy maidens are unable to travel. "Rigger” would mention that Macfarlane and L. Strange should have, quite good chances in the pairs if they made the trip. Auckland crews aro unchanged, as aro St. George’s, except that no senior fours nor youths will be entered. Shore’s seniors will be: D. Davies (str.), W. Dean, F. Krease, W. Segar (bow). Other alterations in the crew’s are: E. Challinor replaces Stokes as bow' of the heavy maidens, and Olliver takes the place of L. Challinor as bow in the lights.
