TO STUDY OUR CURRENTS
METEOROLOGIST FROM SAMOA ASSISTING AVIATION IN NX The upward air current* of New Zealand are to be studied by Mr, Andrew Thomson, Director of the atory at Apia, Samoa. He arrived from Samoa by the. Tofua this morning and will speed a week in Auckland before going in Wellington, wliere he will be attached to the meteorological depart* ment for nine months. Some of the investigations will be carried out at Auckland, and ft is possible that balloons will be used for the purpose. The information which Mr. Thomson will obtain will be used in the interests of aviation and will no doubt be of great use to the aero clubs which have been formed throughout the Dominion, as well as for commercial flying. Mr. Thomson is not a stranger to New Zealand. He was here 10 ysars ago on the yacht Carnegie, which was engaged in scientific investigation in various parts of New Zealand on behalf of the Carnegie Institute m Washington, U.S.A. Since he became director of the observatory in Apia eight years ago, Mr. Thomson has paid a health trip to New Zealand. He said this morning that the Carnegie will reach New Zealand again in about six months’ time. She is now on her way to Samoa. While in Samoa Mr. Thomson has been investigating earthquakes and magnetism, in addition to collecting data regarding the weather. Ap ais the centre of the weather service of the South Pacific.
