Mate O’Mine Wins Gold Cup
FOUR SUCCESSES TO TOMKINSON
(Special to THE SUN)
WELLINGTON, Saturday. rtOUGH overcast the weather remained fine and warm for the Wellington Trotting: Club’s Gold Cup fixture which was successfully carried out to-day at Hutt Park, in the presence of a large attendance.
The course was in good order, and with classy competitors taking part in several of the events, fast times were recorded. Although one of the outsiders. Mate o' Mine, scored a popular win for M. B. Edwards in the Cup, and the handsome trophy was presented to owner R. Grant by the Hon. T. M. Wilford. W. J. Tomkinson had a great “trot,” winning four events with Hinkler (2). Elzear and- Logan Park. J. V. Dyke, driver of Halmore in the opening event, was fined <£2 for erratic handling of liis charge in the straight and warned if the offence was repeated his licence would be reconsidered. Later in the day Dyke drove Halmore home a winner, returning a big price. AUCKLAND NOVICE SCORES Owing to the barriers not functioning correctly, a false start was declared for the Probationers’ Handicap. At the second effort the field got away nicely and Carmel was the first to show out, with Rolex and Slogan just behind him. On reaching the furlong disc. Slogan fell, and brought down Bonnie Locanda and Logan s Pride, and Choysa swerved off tire course. The mishap stopped all the backmarkers. This left Carmel and Rolex well clear of the field, but with half a mile covered in 1.13. Halmore raced up to Carmel and Rolex. mel was at the mile in 2.22. where he proceeded to leave Rolex and Halmore. Going along the back Red Rey came from the discards, and staying on well got to within striking distance or Rolex and Halmore. At the bend for home Carmel retained his big lead ana won easing up. Red Rev sustained his good run, and succeeded in gathering second money, Halmore, Rolex and Ely Direct being next to finish. At one stage of the contest Red Rey was a hundred yards behind the leaders, and while Carmel won very easily. Red Rey would have been troublesome had he not been stopped by Slogan falling. P. Holmes, driver of Slogan, escaped with minor facial abrasions and a nasty shaking. DUKE BINGEN DISAPPOINTS The disappointment of the Kaitoke Handicap was Duke Bingen, who was a firm favourite. He began well and trotted solidly, but could not unwind liis speed, the track not being to bis liking. Herbilwyn rushed out of the barrier with Katute following him closely, and then came Duke Bingen and Sarsaparilla, and s-o they raced until the mile was reached. There Kempton and Elzear began to close on the leaders. Duke’ Bingen and Sarsaparilla were beaten at the far bend, and Kempton was on terms with Herbilwyn and Katute at the top of the lane. Herbilwyn soon cried enough, and Kempton headed Katute, with Elzear now in the picture. Nothing had any chance with Kempton, who won very easily from Katute, with Elzear three lengths farther away. Maxegin made a bad break soon after the start, and Mutu broke up. AN IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY Mr. R. Grant’s chestnut pacer. Mate o’ Mine, registered an attractive performance when he led all the way to win the New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup. He stepped the first two furlongs in fast time and was at the halfmile in 1.7 2-5. He kept unwinding speed, and was at the mile station in 2.15, Talent and Tom Thumb having followed him closely from the start, but Padlock. Native Prince, Pageant and Logan Park were racing at an interval of eight lengths. With six furlongs to go, Native Prince moved up to the leaders, and Mate o’ Mine was going strong at the mile and ahalf disc in 3.24 2-5, where Native Prince put in a dash. Here Tomkinson called upon Logan Park, and he decreased the gap but could not get through. When Mate o’ Mine wheeled for home, Talent, Tom Thumb and Native Prince were all hailing signals of distress. Logan Park then made his run on the outside of them, and though he made a fine effort, he could not reach Mate o’ Mine, who rattled over his last two furlongs in 33 2-ssec. Mate o’ Mine is a solid customer and is bred to improve. Hinkler’s Success
Hinkler’s impressive victory in the Improvers’ Handicap will heighten the opinion of the tliree-year-old’s followers in. the Melbourne Derby. Tomkinson had him handily placed throughout, and never asked him to take the lead until halfway down the straight, where he responded in game manner, and won in accordance with the high reputation the youngster possesses. Trustworthy and Derby Lynn were with him at the turn for home, and C(jra Tacks and Atlialone were giving a lot of cheek also. Of the party, Cora Tacks did the best, as she had to race on the extreme outside, and, finishing strongly, she got to within half a length of Hinkler at the finish. Halmore’s Great Price Halmore cleared out from his rivals over the last mile of the Novice Dash Handicap, and won as he liked from Red Rey, who beat the remainder of the field as easily as Halmore beat him
Slogan began quickly, and paced a true race, but he was beaten a long way from home. Roger Lyon put in good work over the last half-mile to fill third berth. Baron Bingen was forced to cover a lot of ground. The winner, who is owned by T. C. Leadbetter, paid a dividend in the region of half a century. Elzear Wins Well Though Elzear won the Quality Trotters’ Handicap in an attractive manner from Sister Beatrice, both would
TROTTING FIXTURES
have been seriously troubled by Sarsaparilla had lie not lost a good deal of ground through breaking badly on three occasions. He was full of step at the finish, and trotted fast at different stages of the contest. For nine furlongs Mutu led from Duke Bingen, who took the lead with a round to go. 1-Ie hung on to the lead till the home bend was reached, where Sister Beatrice. Elzear, and Sarsaparilla headed him. Over the last 100 yards Elzear outclassed Sister Beatrice. Proud Ata and Bonny Spec went badly and Mutu crumpled up three furlongs from the judge A Hard Finish Though Logan Park won the Dispatch Handicap, he had little to spare at the finish, for all the way down the straight Tomkinson was hard at him to beat Loch Moigh, who had made the pace from the fall of the flag. Black Admiral went his usual honest race into third place, but Audacious failed after having every chance. Free Ad-
vice was a disappointment, and also Native Prince, who was favourably placed with a round to so, but ran out of speed three furlongs from the finish. Hls Fourth Win TouiKinson drove liis fourth winner for the meeting when he landed Hinkler home in the Gracefield Handicap. Following on his brilliant achievement earlier in the day, it was an outstanding performance on the part of the three-year-old to beat a field of seasoned horses over two miles in the fast time of 4.33 4-5. For a mile and three-quarters Trustworthy. Kevinbrae, and then Kiowa made the running, with Limosa, Zella, Atlialone, and Hinkler always well placed. When Zella took charge rounding the bend for home from Kiowa, Atlialone, and L*imosa, it looked as if Hinkler would never get through, but halfway down the straight Zella hobbled, and ran out. This left an opening on the'l-ails, through which Tomkinson pushed Hinkler, the youngster "'inning m sensational style from Kiowa and Athal one. Great Logan, who was heavllj backed, broke several times. Probationers' Handicap, o A,,- i’ miles—s Carmel, vv. ua«u » g 6yrs, by our Thorpe—The Abbess, limit. 1 J. Shaw,.
