THRILLS AND CHILLS

“THE SPY” BY FAMOUS j DIRECTOR No more exciting' picture has yet been produced than “The Spy,” the latest F. Lang production which keeps going in a state of excitement and suspense from beginning to end That is clearly all that is necessary in a first-class melodrama, but producer Lang has given more, for he has made a highly-coloured story crammed with exciting incidents, has allowed time for the development of characterisation without holding up the action, has paid scrupulous attention to detail, has devised situations that are piquant as well as realistic, has scorned freak camera ang’les, induced a clever cast to give of their best, and last, but by no means least, avoided sentimentality in any shape or form. In other words, Lang has shown a grasp of the essentials of popular entertainment equalled by few directors of his calibre and without pandering to conventions. The settings are an important feature, and while the interiors are al- ; ways indicative of the personalities of | those to whom they are supposed to | belong, the exteriors reveal to the full j the possibilities of perfectly equipped ) and extensive studios. DIXIELAND CABARET The Dixieland Cabaret will be the scene of a grand gala night this evening, with dancing until midnight. The situation of this cabaret on Point Chevalier beach ensures chat it is pleasantly cool every evening, and with the perfect dancing floor and music by the Dixieland Dance Band, a frill evening’s entertainment is promised. The Dixieland Cabaret management .ire arranging a special attraction —an Ashes of Roses Ball—for Anniversary Night, January 29.
