STRUCK WITH SPURS

ASSAULT AT PAEROA ACCUSED SENT FOR TRIAL (From Our Own Correspondent) PAEROA, Friday. Charged with assaulting Joseph Brenan and causing him actual bodily harm, Ivan Sokolic appeared in the Paeroa Police Court to-day before Messrs. W. Marshall and C. Lamb, Justices of the Peace. Mr. H. G. Brodie, of Auckland, appeared for accused, and Sergeant Calwell prosecuted. The assault is allaged to have taken place in the Paeroa Domain on November 26 last.

Lengthy evidence was given by boys who saw the assault. Apparently Brenan was attacked by accused on a path through the Domain, while going to his home on the further siae. Accused had a pair of spurs in one hand, and, without cause, struck Brenart several times m a most treacherous way, causing injury so serious that Brenan had been laid up since. Brenan tried to rise from the ground, but accused knocked him down each time Were it not for the appearance of several boys the injuries would have been even greater. Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court at Auckland on February 5. Bail was L,t Asked if be would prefer to stay in Auckland or in Paeroa, Sokolic preferred the latter. The Bench said that If accused remained in Paeroa he was forbidden to be in the town itself.
