Nine Races on Opening Day

FITZHERBERT HANDICAP DIVIDED LATEST FROM TRENTHAM (Special to THE SUN) \VISLINGTON, Friday. j There has been no rain at Trentham for several days, and the tracks and ' course proper now are very dry. but still are in good order and will provide excellent going. The biggest team here yet is that of J. M. Samson, trainer, A. Trilford having arrived with 10 of them, and C. Geisler with three. He has 15 horses entered at the meeting, and altogether made over 10 entries. H. Cutts has arrived with Childsplay and the other of Sir George Clifford’s horses. Childsplay looks well and appears to have done a lot of work. Other arrivals are Royal Saxon. Pink Note, Set Sail and Jeft'erd’s team, consisting of Rapine, Knightlike. Joy King and a couple of two-year-olds. George Paul also is here with Papatu, Aussie, Awarere and Just Nell. Cup Fancies Oratrix and Hoylake are the Cup favourites, and if the weather remains fine they are almost sure to be the favourites on the day of the race. For the Telegraph Handicap Silver Paper is a strong favourite. Gascony in also in favour, and Reremoana and Awarere have big followings. There has been some suggestion that Roy Reed would ride Oratrix in the Wellington Cup on Tuesday, but Reed stated at Foxton this week that he would be on Rapine. The probability is that L. J. Ellis will ride the Trentham mare. Ellis had the mount

when she won the New Zealand Cup, : and handled her excellently. If both | Concentrate and Oratrix aie required j to represent the stable, L. G. Morris might ride Oratrix. Oratrix is extra ; well at present and is expected by j her connections to make a big bid for victory on Tuesday. She has not been knocked about in her work, and her trainer appears to be able to produce her at her best on a com para- j lively light preparation. Her stablemate. Concentrate, has such a handy weight that he does not need to be a first-class three-year-old to win. Rapine is on the big side. lie was i galloped with Star God this morning, j and the pair covered seven furlongs in 1.35. Star God should bo hard to beat in some of the hack events in the very near future. Joy King is as well as ever he was. It is understood that he has been sprinting well lately, i and if that is the :ase he is a Tele- j graph Handicap possibility. A Division Race The club has decided to divide the Fitzherbert Handicap, tor which there were 38 acceptors. This will be the first time that a race has been run in j divisions at Trentham. The winner of each division is to receive -£175, j and the club is adding £SO to be divided between the runners-up in each division, making the total stake money £4OO. The race. although divided, will be treated as one event for betting, the totalisator being open only once. Following are the divisions: First division (showing the bracketed pairs)—Royal Flyer, 8.6; Courtlike, 7.13. Night Lad. 7.10; Valpre 7.10; Sapient. 7.0 and Kilstar 7.7; Beleaire 7.8, and Gay Virginia 7.0: Air Laddie 7.7, and Semper Paratus 7.7; Equitant 7.6, and Don Quixote 7.3. Jazz Girl 7.4, and Solmar 7.0; Jaleux 7.3. and Acre line 7.0: Emotion 7.0, and Hot Springs 7.0: Lady Rene 7.0, and Whinlocli 7.0. Second division —Cuticle 3.5: Tob- | acco Land, 7.12: Royal Line 7.10: Push, j 7.9 ; Tea Queen 7.0 and Dresden China | 7.4; My Own. 7.5: Zarene 7.8: General j Assembly 7.7, and Best Friend 7.6; 1 Glenartney 7.6. and Marcel Wave 7.0; Ex Dono 7.3, and Royal Parade 7.3; Ben Hur 7.0. and Grand Blow 7.0: Hunting Cry 7.0. and Painting 7.0 The large number of brackets is due 1 to the fact that there are only 24 num- ! hers on the machine. Jn addition to the usual band, the Wellington Racing Club will next week provide music by means :»f a gramophone with amplifier attachments serving all parts of the course, and all the stands and appointments. On his Foxton showing Beaumont will have to improve a lot to have a chance in the High-Weight Handicap at Trentham. even after making allowance for the fact that the small course did not suit him. A Better Course Discourse ran a good race at Foxton and will be better suited by the big Wellington course than the turning track at Foxton. She ran a great race on the second day. when she was off the course outside everything in the field the whole way; i Mister Gamp is coming to hand rapidly and will soon be ready to make the hacks do their best to beat him. Bright Day, who has engagements at Trentham, raced well on the first day at Foxton, but badly on the second day. On the whole his form was not highly impressive, even for one engaged in liigli-weight events. The imported horse, Bright Land, who is engaged in the High-weight Handicaps, was to arrive at Trentham to-day. He is said to be somewhat backward in condition yet. If Henna contests tiie Douro Cup she will be well backed, as she ran two good races at Foxton, winning one of them very comfortably.
