PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET

One Wicket for 137

WINNING the toss in the Plunket Shield match at Eden Park this morning, Wellington decided to make first use of an excellent wicket. At the luncheon adjournment, Wellington had lost one ticket for 137 runs.

Following are the teams: Auckland.—C. F. Allcott, capt., E. IT. Bowley, E. Horspool, J. E. Mills. H. D. Gillespie, A. J. Postles, G. L. Weir, It. W. Rowntree, J. A. Dunning, A. S. Player, P. E. Wliitelaw. Wellington.—T. C. Lowry, capt.. J. S. Hiddlestone, R. de R. Worker, IT. Foley, H. McGirr, J. R. Lamason, IT. Lambert, AI. Henderson, G. A. Rotherham, K. C. James, C. S. Dempster. Conditions were well-nigh perfect for cricket when the game started. The wicket was playing well, although the outfield was slightly on the slow side. Dempster and Foley, a left-hander, opened Wellington’s first effort, to the bowling of Dunning and Player. Both batsmen were very quiet at the start. With his score at 10, Dempster gave a possible chance to Player, at cover, buit the fieldsman did not come in quickly enough to anticipate the catch. Rowntree appealed for a catch at the wicket off the same batsman a few minutes later, but without success.

Dempster then clouted Dunning, for three fours in one over, two to the leg side, and the other, a sparkling cover drive to the fence. A slow spell followed, and Allcott, the Auckland captain, started to ring the changes with his bowling. FOLEY CAUGHT Finally, he went on himself and, w’itli the total at 39, Foley, who at no time had looked comfortable, spooned up an easy catch off the left-hander to Horspool, standing close in. 39—1—7. Foley had taken three-quarters of an hour to make his seven runs, but the arrival of Worker, another lefthander, caused the scoring rate to increase. Both Worker and Dempster soon started to open out, combining sound defence with powerful shots in front of the wicket. Dempster reached his half century after 100 minutes’ batting. Worker was rapidly overtaking him. and at that stage, had scored 36. The century
