Blimp's Surprise in Foxton Cup
DEAD-HEAT IN SPRINT MISS PAT AND MONOGHAN (Special to THE-SUK) PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. Held almost on the eve of the Wellington meeting, the annual fixture ul the Foxton Racing Club, which opened to-day, drew a big crowd. The day was brilliantly fine, and the course hard. Totalisator investments were it 17,364, against £12,179 last year. The chief event of the day was won by Blimp, who is engaged in the Wellington Cup, while Golu Cure, a Douro Cup candidate, scored among the hacks. Nightmarch, who would have been the Cup favourite, was withdrawn on the course. Poroutawhao Hurdies The withdrawal of Atareria from the Poroutawhao Hack Hurdles left Panorama to go out favourite. Rash went to the front to lead Deluge, Hymestrason and Asleep to the first fence, where the last named came to grief. Passing through the straight Rash was some 1U lengths clear of Panorama and Deluge, but going away from home Roburant made a forward move, and the favourite dropped back, to steadily drift as the race progressed. Within half a mile of home Rash commenced to stop, and Hymestrason and Deluge were at his heels at the straight entrance, while an indifferent jump at the final fence cost Rash further ground. The trio fought out the issue, however, over the last 60 yards, and Hymestrason managed to retain a head advantage to the post. Deluge being little more than a head behind Rasii. Ten lengths back came Roburant, with Panorama bringing up the Novice Stakes Acredity, Tenacre and Star Girl were favourites in a poor field which contested the Novice Stakes, blit backers of Tenacre did not get a run, the Hawera-trained gelding standing on the mark and taking no part in the contest. Snowshoe and Acredity were smartest to begin, to lead Nasselle, Stur Girl, Warzone and Bione out from the barrier. Bione moved in behind the two leaders crossing the top, and Snowshoe retiring at the straight <entrance, the favourite turned for home ahead of Bione, Nasselle, Snowshoe, Pinch, and within 30 yards of the post Warzone promised to be the winner. But Star Girl lodged a final effort to get up and win from Warzone by a neck, with Bon Acre a long neck back. Bione was fourth, with Acredity, Nasselle, Snowshoe, Painting and Otauru Lass next to finish. Nasselle might improve. The Cup In the absence of Nightmarch, who was an eleventh-hour withdrawal, Toxeuma £829 was the medium of strong support in the Foxton Cup, Lady Limond £394 and Teri £343 being next in request. However, Blimp found the sandy tyack to his liking and produced his old form to win nicely from Maui, who made a promising debut in open company as a distance horse. Blimp was first out of the barrier, but gave way to Teri passing through the straight, while Toxeuma and Royal Game were also ahead of the Awapuni representative passing the stands. Going into the back Blimp ran up into second position behind Teri, with Toxeuma and Royal Game on terms ahead of Maui, Twink and Lady Limond. The field raced in that order cO the half-mile
post, where Blimp went up to Teri, while Lady Limond and Mau: commenced to improve their positions. Landed into the straight Blimp went to the front, and although Maui finished strongly, the leader was never troubled to win by two lengths, with Toxeuma a length and a half behind Maui. Kalos was fourth, with Twink, Lady Limond and Discourse ahead of Teri. Blimp’s sudden return to form surprised investors, and in consequence he paid a great price. Toxeuma was not quite good enough on the day, and Teri failed when the straight was reached. Kilmiss was very sore. Himatangi Hack There was another surprise in the Himatangi Hack Handicap, which Warfille, who has disappointed her connections repeatedly, won narrowly from White Ringlet. Second Thought, Dermod, First Ruler and White Ringlet raced in line for the first furlong, with Warfille and Royal Black bringing up the rear. Crossing the top Warfille ran past the leaders to the turn for home ahead of Second Thought and White Ringlet, with Roy .1 Black coming fast from the rear of the bunch. White Ringlet joined issue with Warfille 50 yards from home, and the pair flashed past the post together, the verdict going to Warfille by a head, with Royal Black a length and a-half back in third lace ahead of Atliolspear and Dermod, with First Ruler and Second Thought fading out of the picture. Second Thought was most disappointing. Warfille will only need to stay a little better to win other similar eUss races. She has a lot of speed. Awahou Hack For the Awahou Hack Handicap, Teremoana £399 was elected favourite from Bissac £283 and Go’d Cure £251. Shining Star, from number one position at the barrier, secured a marked advantage at the lump-out to lead Gold Cure, Lady Alophen Land Guard and Degree into the back. Degree deposed Gold Cure running down the back stretch, with Land Guard and Teremoana next. The last-named however, was not experiencing tho best of runs. Rounding the top Bfssac moved forward in company with « uroi a Borealis, and the pair turned for home on terms with Gold Cure, Shining Star having commenced to drift. With the serious business entered upon Gold Cure strode to the front to win nicely by a length and a-half from Bissac, who had a neck advantage over Mister Gamp, who finished fast on the rails. Shining Star was fourth, ■with Teremoana, Aurora Borealis and Volplane next to pass the post. Gold Cure will now increase in favour for the Douro Cup, to be run at Trentham next week. He looks well, and as he struck a little bad luck nearing home his win was due to sheer superiority. In the six-horse field for tlie Anniversary Handicap, Callanmore £485 was preferred to Helotis £459, and Miss Pat £387, Monoghan, who ultimately shared the honours with Miss Pat. being the outsider of the field. Helotis. who had drawn the inside position at the barrier, jumped out with her usual dispatch to lead Borsalene, Callanmore, Monoghan and Miss Pat. Half a mile from home Millais joined Helotis. while Monoghan ran up ahead
uf Borsalene and Callanmore. Once in line for home Miss Pat speedily gathered up the leaders, but the weight told against the top weight over the final pinch, and Monoghan came across the line on terms with Miss Pat. there being a gap of a length and a-half to Callanmore. Millais was fourth, a further length and a-half back, with Helotis ahead of Borsalene. Helotis stopped badly in the straight. Miss Pat finished with a great run from the back, but her weight told at the end and Monoghan got up to dead-heat with her. Miss Pat’s was an excellent performance. Callanmore should be improved by the. race. The bracket, Balloon and Tenacre. was favourite for the Marotiri Hack Handicap. Those who supported it were lucky. The support really was for Balloon, but he was beaten and Tenacre pulled the backers through. Tenacre was in front most of the way and led across the top and into the straight from Tapestry, Star Girl, Sumbur and Balloon. A good finish ensued, Tenacre winning by a neck from Boundary, with Tapestry a neck away, third, and Balloon and Star Girl next. Herrington Handicap Henna and Vigilance, both of whom are trained on the course, were well fancied for the Herrington Handicap, which drew only a small field. Vigilance again disappointed, but Henna made good, winning easily by half ;■ | length from Bright Day, with Bin Ai - | lington a fair third, and Vigilance next ; Decoy Bird led to the straight, hi caved in when Henna tackled him.
