ELECTORS' APATHY
MOUNT ROSKILL CONTEST KEEN RETURNING OFFICER Small interest was shown in the Mount Roskill by-election yesterday, when a poll was taken to fill the vacancy the road board caused by the resignation of Mr. Thomas Davies. Of 2,526 voters entitled to exercise 3,489 votes, only 282 voted. , The official recount this morning gave Mr. R. W. S. Sanft 154 votes, a majority of 36 over the opponent, Mr. A. St. Clair Belcher, who polled 128. The apathy displayed may perhaps be accounted for by the fact that the annual election of the whole board will take place in May. One deputy returning officer increased his returns considerably by stopping many ratepayers on their way home, and persuading them to “come inside and vote.” Details of the voting are as follows, the figures for Mr. Sanft being mentioned first: Chamber of Commerce, 45, 15; Pah Road, 10, 16; Richardson Road, 15, 2; Road Board office, 35, 43; Greenwood’s Corner, 12, 36; Dominion Road, 37, 16.
