NEEDLES
For the benefit of newcomers to the ranks of gramophone enthusiasts the following graduation of loudness in needles is given: Columbia, “Brilliant,” is almost a loud needle; then come H.M.V. and other “mediums”; then Columbia “Ideal,” slightly softer; then Cliftophone Arrow, rather loud but very mellow in tone; then Cleopatra Medium, which is almost a soft tone; then come the real “soft-tone” needles which, if long, are apt to “hiss” slightly, and often are difficult to grip in the socket, especially if this has the triangular cut for fibres. The H.M.V. soft tone is now made an eighth of an inch shorter, which slightly increases the volume, ' and much improves the tone. If you have worn out a beloved record with loud needles you can often give it new life by using fine needles.
