TROTTING

Preliminaries for Hutt Park CLASSY FIELDS FOR SATURDAY SEVERAL AUCKLANDERS ENGAGED The third one-day meeting of the Wellington Trotting Club, for present season, will eventuate at Hutt Park on Saturday, and while * n some instances the fields are on the scanty side, the material engaged is of such standard as to ensure first class sport. The presence of horses from Auck.ml will give local enthusiasts a eener interest in the fixture, and \vith such worthy opponents as PagPrince, Trustworthy, Lady Barrington, tlicj Ax worthy. Carmel and the Te \wamutu trotter Mister, there should he reasonable prospects of a share of the prize money finding its way to this ten ic Qpl d Cup Field Native Prince, who worked out a Vodfl two-mile before leaving for the South, will have a big following in the i up, off his 12-yard mark, but it canuot be looked upon as any certainty, *-ith such worthy opopnents- as Pageant and Toni Thumb on the same mark. The latter has not been seen his best for some time, but was showing a return to fortn at Canterbury Park on the concluding day. Pageant has put up such good performances this season, particularly over two miles, that he must be given ;l roy al chance. His victory at New Year over this distance was full of merit. His stable mate, Logan Park, ~r l 24 yards, is also a big possibility, so that Tomkinson will have a strong string with his bracket. Too much notice cannot be taken of King Pointer’s failure at Epsom in the Summer Cup, as Hooper’s representative is not partial to the right-handed style of racing. With conditions more to his liking King Pointer will have a „ ;iy in the finish. Free Advice won the Summer Cup so effectively at Vlexandra Park last month that the Auckland-owned filly must be kept on side. Her performances this season stamp her as a top-hole pacer. Bonny Logan is coming back to form, as she demonstrated during the New Year meetings, and Padlock went so well in the Auckland Cup to suggest he must be reckoned with off 4.27. The limit pair, Mate o’ Mine and Talent, should be held safe by those close up. Tomkinson’s bracket. Native Prince, Free Advice and King Pointer should share favouritism on the day. The Other Leg The Dispatch Handicap, of 10 furlongs, will give those who like to select probables for the double a rare chance, as the class is pretty select aid several of the runners have recent form as a recommendation. If Loch Moigh is right he would lead the rest a merry dance, but at the Auckland meeting recently he did not show his true form. Audacious, who won over a similar distance at the last Wellington meeting, did not reproduce that form at the local Christmas carnival, and it looks as if Black Admiral who Is on 12 yards, shou«£ hold ihe limit pair safe. Then ttAre is the brilliant Free Advice, and Ihe greatly improved Pageant on the same mark, and both can cut out a merry mile and a-quarter. Logan Park, bracketed with Pageant, is a crack-a-jack at this journey, so again Tomkinson has a big say. Bonny Logan will also keep them busy while Native Prince, if reserved for this heat, would make it awkward. Tomkinson’s pair, Free Advice and Black Admiral, look to hold rosy prospects. Other Events Big fields will contest the novice races, and in the Probationers’ Handicap Slogan, El Direct, Carmel and Choysa appear to have fine prospects, while the same lot, with perhaps Alice Axworthy, will make the Dash Handicap interesting. The Improvers' Handicap will find Trustworthy in demand, but Lady Barrington, Zella, Hal Huon and Derby Lynn are sure to make the Auckland ftlly'3 job difficult. In the slow twomile Gracefleld Handicap. Great Logan -tnd Athlon© are a likely pair, but Lady Barrington and Hinkler will add interest to the event. Trotters’ Tests Two heats are set down for the square-gaiters, and with few exceptions, the same candidates will measure strides. In the Kaitoke Handicap (12 furlongs). Nelson Boy, Duke Bingen, Sar*aparilli, and Maxegin appeal most, while over the larger journey of the Quality Handicap, Sarsaparilla, Proud > Ata. Sister Beatrice and Elzear will command respect. A flnal review' of the fields by “Abay<*o*” will appear in to-morrow’s issue of The Sun. When Logan Park was defeated by Audaci'ous at the last Wellington meeting, Tomkinson’s pacer conceding the winner 36 yards. Since then both have run unplaced, but at the Hutt Park on Saturday. 'J'here they meet over the same distance, ten furlongs, Logan Park •• B ®t to give his conqueror an additional six yards. While allowing that Logan Park lost a lot of ground when the pair met last time, the fact remains that Audacious got the stake, and the dividend, while Logan Park got it in neck.
