NORTHCOTE COUNCIL
HIGHWAY SUBSIDIES APPROVED At U»e initial meeting for this year of the Northcote Borough Council, hehi last evening, the Mayor, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, briefly outlined the works to be carefully considered during the coming year. He said the main item was the fertile* concreting of the Lake and Onewi Roads, which had been declared main highways. This would necessitate a further loan, but with the subsidy from the Main Highways Board he thought it w'ould be favourably viewed by the ratepayers. He hoped to bring this work to a successful issue before the council retired in May. The footpaths lo the borough were to receive immediate attention. The construction of a sprayer for colifix sealing is in progress, and as soon as it is delivered the sealing of Queen Street footpaths will be put in hand. The classification of roads under th« Motor Lorry Regulations, as suggested by the borough works overseer, wal adopted. The Main Highways Board, Wellington, notified the council that a subsidy of £2 for £1 had been approved for the tar-sealing of the shoulders on the Queen Street paving contract. The estimated cost for two coats of tar seal and making good expansion joints, is £1,300. of this amount the couneil will contribute £433 6s Sd, the balance, fiW 13s 4d, being the subsidy received. Before proceedings with this work the council decided to confer with the engineer, Mr. Greville Walker, and if in his opinion the shoulders were consolidated enough, to proceed with this work im* mediately. The No. 1 District Highways Council advised that the business area in th« borough extended from the wharf to the junction of Onewa Road, and that th 9 erection of motor traffic signs would b* sibsidised £2 for £l.
