N.Z. SHEEP PROBLEM
IMPROVING OF ROMNEY WOOL SIR J. PARR AT BRADFORD (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) ( U nited Service ) Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. Sir James Parr, High Coxftmissioner for New Zealand, spent a day at Bradford and addressed 400 members of the Bradford Textile Society. He replied to criticisms of New Zealand’s breeding methods and described the Department of Agriculture’s efforts to improve them. He concluded by saying that the problem facing New Zealand sheepmen is not with what they will replace Romneys, which are best from a meat viewpoint, but what methods of breeding must be carried out to eliminate hair fibre. He eulogised the great work of the Wool Research Institute. Mr. William Hunter advocated the introduction of Lincolns, which, he believed, would result in 25,000 to 50,000 more bales, for which a better market would be obtained. Professor Barker said the Textile Department of Leeds University was carrying out experiments in Romney wools, by which it was hoped to get rid of the defects.
