GUNNERY PRACTICE
BATTLE-TARGET TO BE USED WARSHIPS IN THE GULF To-morrow the huge floating target built for the New Zealand Naval Division will make its first journey out into the ocean. The target, which was specially built for battle practice, has been anchored at Devonport for some time. To-morrow morning a tug will take it from its moorings to H.M.S. Veronica which will tow it out into the Hauraki Gulf. 1 Within the next few days the warships of the Division will carry out gunnery practice in the gulf and the floating battle-target will be used for the first time. Tlie target, w'hich cost £IO,OOO to build, is not intended for destruction. Shells may burst round it in the ocean, but they are not expected to make a direct hit. The target draws 12 feet of water and in the construction of it 240,000 feet of Oregon pine were used.
