Bridson Clips 3 secs. Off 220 yds. Record

SWIMMER UNHURRIED FINE PARNELL CARNIVAL When Gordon Bridson, Auckland champion long distance swimmer, established a new record for New Zealand for a 220yds ri»ce in salt water at the Parnell Swimming Club’s carnival at the Tepid Baths last evening, he was far from being extended.

"It just occurred to make an attempt on i ■was after I had dived in for the race,” was Bridson’s admission to The Sun. Bridson clipped three seconds off L. Kronfeld's time of 2m 31 3-ss.

The record was not official, but Bridson has stated his intention of attempting a record under official condiitons at the Auckland championships at the . baths next Monday evening. Bridson is aware that he was not extended, and regards the race in which he made the fast time as simply “hard. ’ Bridson was accorded a wonderful reception by the attendance ot nearly 700 at easily the best carnival lie d in Auckland so far this season. All-round improvement was shown in organisation and competition. No delay took place. The Parnell Club made a real success in the handling of the biggest programme decided this season. An indication of the number of competitors was seen in the 50 entrants in the inter-club race. ENA STOCKLEV IN FORM Ena Stockley, Olympic representative, and Boris Magee, provided a thrill in the women’s sprint. Both were in excellent form. Miss Magee conceded Miss Stockley half a second, and the pair raced stroke for stroke the whole distance. Miss Stockley headed her rival home into third place behind two handicap girls by a touch. After two semi-finals, the novice sprint went to R. Blackman, who was on a fair mark. Such swimmers as JFarrell, B. Plank, L. Fairgray, E. V. Cunnold. R. de Loree, R. Sellars, R. Colebrook and B. E. Keane, made the heats interesting. A feature was the appearance o ex-Aucklander, F. Smith, of the Park Club, Melbourne, in an inter-club heat. He swam strongly, but handicap men shut him out. T. Lowe, who is regarded as Auckland’s best breast-stroke swimmer in the absence of the champion, X. K. Sylow, suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Jimmie Magee in a great Jack Enwright showed a flash of his old form when he beat Be Loree for second place in the final of the 220yds. Bridson did not start in the final. Enwright swam stroke for stroke with Do Loree and drew away over the last 40 yards*. Four of Auckland’s best divers, Hassan. Neale, Bruton and Johnston, gave a diving exhibition, and another interesting feature was the 500yds relay race for the Tui Memorial Cup. Mount Eden’s team won. A newcomer in the novice race was J. Stehr, who was second in the final. He is 6ft 6in tall, and has a remarkably powerful stroke. The mixed relay was exciting. Results: 220VDS OPEN HANDICAP First heat: G. Bridson (Grammar), scr, 1; W.
