INCREASE IN PETROL-TAX URGED WAIKATO SUPPORTS TAURANGA (From Our Own CorrespondentJ HAMILTON, To-day. The resolution framed by the Tauranga County Council expressing alarm at the increasing burden on ratepayers for main highways, and urging an increase in the petrol-tax is heartily supported by the "Waikato County Council. At to-day’s meeting strong opposition to the tax was expressed by Cr. T. H. Henderson, who claimed that settlers on the side roads with cars, derived no benefit. This contention was disputed by the county engineer, Mr. A. A. Woodward, who said the petrol-tax proceeds went direct on to the side roads, as the main roads were maintained from the highway board’s funds. The county’s allocation of the tax was about £5,000 annually. * In replying to a councillor who urged nationalisation of the highways, Mr. Woodward said the modern tendency was to merge the counties, and if the Government took over the highways it would have an excuse to combine more areas. The engineer added that. Waikato County's share of the board’s revenue this year amounted to £12,720, including £6,600 for the Hamilton -Cambridge highway. This represented a big increase on the past year’s figures The council supported the resolution.
