DISTRICT GASSED

LONDON MAINS BREAK HOXTON WOMAN KILLED (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Monday. A serious situation has been occasioned by breakages of underground gas and water mains in London since the recent gas disaster in Holborn. Yesterday a big escape of gas at Hoxton resulted in a woman being killed and 15 other persons seriously poisoned. Exciting scenes occurred when someone smelt gas and gave the alarm. Scores of men, women, and children hurried into the street in their night attire. Some were sick and dazed. Others were rescued from their beds in an unconscious condition. It is regarded as a miracle that the death roll was not larger. A water main burst in Edgware Road and the water erupted at numerous points over a radius of half a mile. Wood blocks were lifted from roadways and macadamised streets were crumpled up as though they were • brown paper. •
