Foxton Cup

SMART THREE-YEAR-OLDS IN

Nightmarch and Toxeuma

DRILLIANT three- year-olds in Nightmarch and Toxeuma will be on hand to contest the Foxton Cup to-morrow, prior to going on to fulfil engagements at Trentham next week. A review of the opening day’s programme at Foxton follows.

Form over the holidays at the midNorth Island meetings will or should provide an excellent guide to the horses engaged at Foxton on Wednesday. Particularly is this the case with the Manawatu and Marton fixtures, for most of those engaged to-morrow at least were raced at these two centres. Quality of a most unusual sort is represented for a couple of good three-year-olds are to be seen out in the Foxton Cup. The going at Foxton promises to be

in excellent order, wet or fine, for the. sandy nature of the turf takes a lot of soaking. POROUTAWHAO HURDLES First on the card is the Poroutawhao Hurdles, with its field of eight only. Atareria is not reliable, but his second at Marton recently was a worthy effort. Panorama was backed at that meeting also, to fail without excuse. Hymestrason had Elicit fully extended when the latter scored, and on that showing must do well at the meeting. Asleep is a good one of whom little has been heard of late, and Deluge is a promising novice. Rash paid a great dividend when he finished second to a good one in Novar at Otaki a couple of months ago. However, one comes back to Hymestrason and Asleep. NOVICE STAKES They are an exceedingly poor lot in the Novice event, and anything that can muster any speed at all should be a good speculation. Warzone was fourth in similar company at Marton, and Acred ity second in a juvenile race on the same day, and they may command most support. FOXTON CUP Some good horses have got on the winning list in the Foxton Cup, and it is very probable that the winner of tomorrow’s race will not suffer by comparison with his predecessors. At the head is Nightmarcli, aiid a fine tliree-year-old he is indeed. He scored a very comfortable win under 8.3 in the Marton Cup, and although he is up 111 b. the opposition is really much below that he was was able to vanquish on New Year’s Day. Next, and in receipt of 101 b., is another good three-year-old in Toxeuma, who ran three fine races at Ellerslie. Teri continues to be unlucky, and Royal Game may not be good enough for the juveniles. Further down there are useful sorts in Blimp, Kilmiss, Lady Limond, Discourse, Kalos, Maui and Rotowhero (who showed up well among the hacks at Wairarapa recently). It is difficult to go beyond Nightmarch and Toxeuma and they should certainly carry the bulk of the investments. HIM ITANGI HACK The form of Second Thought at

Wairarapa during: the New Year was very good, and Dermod shaped ass if he would soon be coming to hand when he raced at the same fixture. Add two Marton winners in White Kinglet and First Ruler, and it will be hard to judge between them. Probably Dermod, (a half brother to the speedy Gaillard) and First Ruler will share favouritism. AWAHO’U HACK There appear some good hacks in the Awahou Hack, a race that in the past has seen some surprising results. Volplane sprang a surprise at Wairarapa, but a couple of seasons ago he showed lino promise, and now probably he is coming to hand once more. Havering should be served by the distance. This pair, and probably Gold Cure, will carry the most money. ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP The sprint has only seven left in, Miss Pat, a double winner at Marton, being at the head with 9.2, a weight that will probably be reduced to 8.11 with the allowance. Miss Pat has been winning all along the lino of late, and she will go well her too, despite her rise She won with 5.6 at Marton the second time. Another model of consistency is Epistle, winner at her last three starts, and a really smart performer when caught right, as she appears to be now. ITelotis can scamper, and Callanmore seems to fall a bit short of winning these days. Millais and Monoghan are two lightweights well in, particularly the latter, and she is capable of springing a surprise. As in the Cup, however, the two at the top. Miss Pat and Epistle, appear to dominate the situation. MAROTIRI HACK HANDICAP “Weak” fails to describe the field in the Marotiri . Hack Handicap. Boundary is a winner, and for that reason has to be considered. Balloon failed badly at Marton, but has the chance to make amends. However, it looks as if the race is made for the top-weight, Boundary, who will be a good favourltC‘ HERRINGTON HANDICAP If reserved for the concluding event, the Herrington Handicap, Royal Game would probably be best backed. Henna has been out of luck for a long time,

but her last outing was promising. Vigilance and Lin Arlington may be the pick of those on the other side of the handicap. Perhaps the speculators will pin their faith to Henna and Vigilance. CUP RIDERS Roy Reed is to pilot Nightmarch in the Cup. T. Green will be on Toxeuma. E. A. Keesing on Teri, and H. Wiggins is to pilot Lady Limond.
