Sport at Thames

FLYING JULIET TAKES CUP Three Hot Favourites Score FOLLOWERS of favourites at the Thames meeting’ on Saturday fared but moderately, for there were at least two big surprises. The fixture opened auspiciously, there being a large attendance, a good totalisator turnover and an excellent course for racing on.

r ITHE course has undergone consider- \ able alteration since the last meeting was held, at Parawai two years ago, and this made for better and safer racing. Three favourites scored, but they were at very cramped odds. The management of the day’s sport left little to be desired, and with clean racing patrons had no reason to regret their participation. The meeting is being concluded to-day, good fields having been paid up for. The totalisatoi' handled £19,513, compared with £17,484 on the first day of the meeting held at Thames two seasons ago (last year’s racing was conducted at Ellerslie), an increase of £2.069. Notes on the racing and details of results follow: Tapu Handicap His Ellerslie form resulted in Good Boy being installed a pronounced favourite in the opening event, the Tapu Handicap, run into two divisions, 12 running in the first and 10 in the second. Good Boy carried £338, and

then in the betting came High Tide £2Ol and the King Leslie-Footpad bracket £192. There were two surprises, the respective winners, Flying Tresses and Valuation, being entrusted with but £4s} and £3B respectively, being eleventh and thirteenth favourites, double figure returns going to their few supporters. In the first division Princess Electra was badly left, Footpad and High Tide beginning best. At the end of a furlong Flying Tresses was making play from Footpad, the Jack Jumper, and Swiftlight. Crossing the top Flying Tresses and Footpad were still in the van, being attended by Dainty Arch, Swiftlight and The Jack Jumper. As they turned for home Dainty Arch had run up second to Flyiny Tresses, with Footpad, the Jack Jumper, High Tide, and Gold Lily following. FlyingTresses showed the field a flying tail in the run to the judge, winning by a length from the little fancied Dainty Arch, The Jack Jumper being a further length and a-half back. High Tide was fourth, and then came Footpad, King Leslie and Ah Wera. The favourite. Good Boy, began best of those in the second division, Josie Melville, Camp Prince, Valuation and Prince of Orange being at his heels when they had settled down. Along the back Good Boy and Josie Melville were still prominent in front, Valuation, Camp Prince and Justify being next, and the rest already out of the picture. Good Boy turned for homo just in front of Valuation, with Justify and Camp Prince close up and the others a long way back. The favourite weakened in the straight, and Valuation got up to beat him by a length. A length and a-lialf away was Prince of Orange, and at the head of the remainder were Camp Prince, Josie Melville and Land Measure. Borough High-Weight

Three defections left a field or II in the Borough High-weight, and the consistent Ramblin’ Kid was made favourite with £ 437. His backers were a bit unfortunate, for he was going well in a handy position half a mile from home when he bled and was pulled up. Two others to come in for fair support were War Officer and the winner Bizarro £252, while the second horse, Mashoor, was entrusted with £142, being at a nice price. Mangani was slow to begin, Bizarro leading out from Mashoor, War Officer, Whaka King, Foxhound and Ramblin’ Kid. Going down the back Bizarro was still making play from Whaka King, War Officer, Archeno, Ramblin’ Kid, Mashoor and Mangani. Crossing the top the Absurd gelding was still in the van from War Officer, Mangani, Mashoor, Whaka King and Archeno. Up the straight Bizarro retained his advantage and went on to win by a couple of lengths from Mashoor, who was a length in front of War Officer. Fourth was Mangani (who should do better on Monday), and then came Asmodeus, Archeno and Gold Rain. Puriri Handicap The Puriri HandicajD proved to be the best of good things for Subdivision, who hit the front soon after the start and made no race of it. He was second choice with £438, Arihana £547 being a warm favourite, with Roman Pearl £271 ajid Princess Rain £220 at good odds. Takutama, Envoy and Roman Pearl went away fast, but in short order Subdivision went to the front and led from Takutama, Princess Rain, Envoy, Atapai and Arihanq,. Crossing the top Subdivision was out two lengths in advance of Princess Rain, Crown Arch. Takutama, Indolent and Atapai. The pacemaker had increased his advantage to four lengths at the home turn, nearest to him at that stage being Princess Rain, Takutama. Crown Arch, Indolent, Envoy and Arihana, the field being strung out. Subdivision went on to win with the greatest ease by two and a-half lengths from Princess Rain, Takutama being two lengths further . back in third place. Indolent got up fourth, being followed by Envoy, Arihana, Roman Pearl and Crown Arch. Goldfields Cup The Goldfields Cup proved the best of good things for the favourite, Flying Juliet, although she was hardpressed by Wenday ail the way. The withdrawal of Oliinemuri and King Smock left a small field of half a dozen for the big event, and in a fair pool there was liberal support for Flying Juliet £909, with Le Choucas £695 and Wenday £513 heading the remainder, with a drop to £240 on To Koroke. A ragged start saw Flying Juliet lead out from Wenday/ Te Koroke, Eh Timi, Le Choucas and Serang. The favourite led into the back stretch £rom Wenday and Eh Timi, with Te Koroke and Le Choucas handy. As the field started to file across the top Flying Juliet and Wenday were on terms two and a-half lengths in front of Eh Timi, with Te

Koroke, Le Choucas and Serang following in that order. At the home turn the two in front were still together, holding a lead of two lengths, the order of the others being the same as previously. Flying Juliet and Wenday had the finish to themselves, the former pulling her backers through by half a length. Three lengths away was Le Choucas, just in front of Eh Timi, who ran a surprisingly good race. Te : Koroke was next and Serang chased them home. Eh Timi carried 101 b overweight. Parawai Hack Good Boy, beaten into second place in a weak field in the second division of the Tapu Handicap earlier in the day, sprang a mild surprise when he captured the Parawai Hack. He was only moderately backed, carrying £425, against Leitrim £857 and Lucy Rose £527. Ijucy Rose led along the back from Leitrim, Good Boy, Arch Queen, Orchus, Whaka King and Frothblcwer. Crossing the top Lucy Rose was a length and a-half in front of Leitrim, Good Boy, Whaka King and Frothblower following them. As they turned for home Lucy Rose and the favourite were on terms a length and a-half

ahead of Good 80% and Whaka King. In the straight Good Boy got through on the rails and went on to win from Lucy Rose by a length, with Leitrim a length and a-half away third. Frothblower was fourth, and Whaka King, Orchus and Arch Queen next to cross the line. Flying Handicap High Finance, £972, was toacKed as a certainty for the sprint, and she won as she liked. Best backed of the remainder were Liaison £ 427, the Takutama-Katarena bracket £3lB, and Billikins £315. Katarena was left at the start, High Finance making play early from Liaison, Takuta,ma, Billikins, Town Bird and Master O’Rorke. High Finance and Liaison were still the leading pair crossing the top, pursued by Town Bird. Takutama, Billikins and Regent. Turning for home the favourite was clear of Liaison, who was in turn clear of Takutama and Town Bird. Once in line I-ligh Finance cleared out, winning very easily by three and a-half lengtjis from Liaison, with Takutama third half a length away, and Billikins fourth. Next in order were Town Bird, Master O’Rorke and Regent. The win was a ridiculously easy one. Of those behind Billikins is likely to improve the most on the concluding day. Waitakaruru Handicap The top-weight, Maori Boy, duly won the Waitakaruru Hack, but he was only third favourite with £586, backers preferring Valroe £670 and Glenstar £619. Glenstar and Valroe led out of the straight from Maori Boy, Master Roley and Hakanoa, the lastnamed moving up into fourth place entering the back stretch. Along the back there was little separating Glenstar, Valroe, Maori Boy and Ilakanoa. Crossing the top Maori Boy shot through on the rails and was in front at the home turn, with Glenstar and Valroe right up. In the run to the post Maori Boy had little difficulty in holding his own to beat Glenstar by a 1 couple of lengths. The little-fancied 1 Charitaine finished well and was only a neck behind Glenstar in third place. ' Hakanoa was fourth, and Valroe and ; Master Roley followed. • Hauraki Plains Handicap j The Cup winner was the sole defec- . tion from the concluding event, the r I-lauraki Plains Handicap, and a hot J favourite was served up in Oliinemuri, , who was backed £ 300 better than r Modest Boy, and that the punters > summed it up right was reflected in . in the result, a dead-heat between the 1 pair. Black Maire and Modest Boy t gained the best of the dispatch from r the inside positions, and going along l the back Black Maire was clear of Prince Lu, Tinoiti, Modest Boy and Scat. Crossing the top Modest Boy joined Black Maire in the lead, having got through on the inside, the former

piloting the field into the home stretch, Archeen, Black Maire, Cynthia N., Auriculus and Oliinemuri following. Half-way up the running Modest Boy was in front, but the favourite was coming with a great rattle, and in a desperate finish it was a dead-heat, with Oliinemuri ahead a stride past the post, for Modest Boy was stopping badly. Archeen was a couple of lengths back, and then came Cynthia N., Scat and Black Maire. Ohinemuri was one of those good things beaten, sometimes seen on a racecourse.
