PLEA FOR THE DRAMA
DEAD PLAYWRIGHT’S WILL “INTEREST, UNDERSTANDING” (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Friday. . The playwright, Mr. ITenry Arthur Jones, who died on Monday, included in his will a message dealing with the future of the theatre. Tie wrote: “Several times when I offered my best work to the public, regardless of popular success, I encountered condemnation both from the Press and the public. “I am convinced that England cannot have modern drama worthy of her place in the nations until the great body of English men of letters have a diligent understanding of and interest in the theatre. I ask them to accept this legacy of a last few words in the spirit of forbearance and friendliness.” Mr. Rudyard Kipling. Sir James Barrie, and Sir Arthur Wing Pinero are all indisposed and were unable to attend the funeral to-day.
